Sweeping historical novel set in South Africa during the first Anglo-Boer War (1880-81). Chronicles the contributions to the war effort of several generations of the du Toit family, who live together on a farm property known as Mooipaas. The Hill of Doves (the book is named for the site of a decisive battle) is remarkable for bringing to life a period of history long past and a way of life that couldn't be more remote to North American readers. Provides great insight into the plight of the Africaans and their ongoing battle against English domination, which would come to a head in the Second Anglo-Boer War twenty years later.
