Nei primi anni del regime, i nazisti concentrarono la loro attenzione sulle presunte attività sovversive della Chiesa in patria. Negli anni della guerra, invece, si resero conto che in Vaticano confluivano notizie che per loro potevano essere di grande interesse. I nazisti, peraltro, davano per scontato che Pio XII simpatizzasse per gli Alleati e sostenesse nascostamente la loro causa. Lo scopo dell'attività di spionaggio era proprio quello di smascherare e neutralizzare le macchinazioni pro-Alleati del Vaticano. Il volume nasce da una ricerca ventennale. I due autori prendono in esame i tentativi di infiltrazione tedesca in Vaticano, la decifrazione dei codici segreti, il proliferare delle agenzie di spionaggio e alcune delle vicende più interessanti e rocambolesche della guerra segreta che si svolgeva tra le vie di Roma e attorno a piazza San Pietro. David Alvarez ha insegnato presso le università di Parigi e Roma ed è attualmente professore al St Mary's College in California.Robert. A. Graham, sj, prima della sua morte nel 1997, è stato la principale autorità mondiale riguardo alla diplomazia vaticana moderna. Il suo volume Diplomazia pontificia (Edizioni Paoline 1962) costituisce ancora oggi la più importante opera di riferimento in materia. (fonte: amazon)
