Description
Absinthe is the story of Jean Mardet. In his house, a house noted on no official register, in his cellar, among his alembics and flagons, Jean, now known as Jose--priest, magician, sage--celebrates his curious mass, surrounded by his flock, distibuting his wonderful and bitter drink. And to a young boy in the village, Jose seems a wizard, and something more--revealing to the young boy the mysteries of absinthe and mesmerizing the youth with the fabulous stories and emotions that the drink show more inspires, until March 17, 1915. That day absinthe is outlawed in his country and Jose disappears, taking with him the secrets of his art and of his past. But a boy of nine has discovered the astonishing powers of absinthe, the green enchantress: he has daydreamed amid the chaos of the stills and has learned well at the hand of the old distiller. And in the mysteries of the green liquer has discovered his own past and future. show lessTags

I started the book "Absinthe" with some doubts, although I must admit that I was quite curious, familiar with the display of a liquor store in Amsterdam that has one of its windows full of this famous drink.
In the film Moulin Rouge with Nicole Kidman, this drink appears as a cheerful intoxicant, but history has also shown that it had dangers. While in France, as reported in the book, a ban finally came about around 1915, in the Netherlands it was already banned in 1909 because in some cases it would lead to madness.
The writer shows us that absinthe held people in its power, apparently inspiring them, and takes us into a biography that revolves around the distiller Jose, interwoven with the influence he had on Jean's family. Not a show more high-flown story, but an attractive story in which you can almost feel the scents and colors of the absinthe rising from the pages. show less
