When speed reading was popular, this was a good introduction. It did show me how to pre-read and to do some thinking about what I'd just read.

Sometimes speed-reading is the way to go, but often slow reading is a better way to approach text.
I have always considered myself to be a slow reader and have always wanted to improve my speed. I once had a professor who had taken the Evelyn Wood program and could read through his students' research papers at an amazing speed. Because I did not want to spend a lot of money taking the actual class, I decided to give this book a try. Although I cannot read with the speed that others have attained by taking the class, I have to admit that this book has allowed me to increase my speed somewhat. This book describes how to prepare yourself for reading, make your environment conducive to reading, and use hand movements to aid in gaining speed, as well as other techniques. One thing that I discovered is that by reading faster, my mind is show more forced to concentrate more, and therefore I do not find my thoughts wandering as much as they used to do. If you are interested in increasing your reading speed or comprehension, I suggest giving this book a try. show less

Per the title, it's (only) about 30% speed reading technique. The remaining topics include taking lecture notes, studying for exams, writing reports, etc. Good for any self=-motivated student who wants to read and study faster and more efficiently.

I haven't finished this yet. Don't tell me how it ends.
