Description

No other figure embodies revolutionary politics, radical chic and the promises and failures of the New Left quite like Ulrike Meinhof (1934-76). In the 1960s, she was known in Europe as a journalist and public intellectual, leading an exciting life in Hamburg's high society with her publisher husband and twin daughters. 10 years later, Meinhof gave up her bourgeois existence to form, with Andreas Baader and Gudrun Ensslin, the Red Army Faction (RAF). Also called the Baader-Meinhof Gang, the show more group was notorious for its politically motivated acts of violence. show less

People of Ulrike Meinhof's generation, who came of age right after the fall of the Nazi's, must have felt they lived in a world full of hypocrisy. Virtually every older person would have contained some taint from the recent past, obliterating any claim to moral authority. It is easy to see how one could become radicalized in such a society.

These writings are the product of living in those times. They barely touch on, and certainly don't excuse the violence and cruelty of the RAF, Meinhof's shift from writer to terrorist remains enigmatic; however, they give an unusually articulate impression of progressive thought in central Europe at the hight of the Cold War.
