Description

Eight Lectures on Yoga is a book by English occultist and teacher Aleister Crowley about the practice of Yoga. The book is number four of volume three of The Equinox, which was published by the Ordo Templi Orientis. The work is largely a demystified look at Yoga, using little to no jargon or satirical humor. It is divided under two sections into eight parts, which are transcripts of eight one-hour lectures on the subject given by Crowley.

Eight Lectures on Yoga is divided into two show more sections: "Yoga for Yahoos" and "Yoga for Yellowbellies". In the book, Crowley instructs students on the steps needed to approach mysticism through Yoga, and details the complications that arise along the path. One intent Crowley had in writing the book was to dispel the various myths surrounding Yoga in Europe at the time - most thought it to be an exotic, Eastern ritual of the ancient past.

Finally got around to reading this. Amusing and somewhat instructive.
Nearly sixty years have elapsed since I was first introduced to Part I of Book 4, Crowley's first little masterpiece on Yoga. It thoroughly debunked the entire subject and then laid down some firm notions as to what Yoga consisted of without the usual claptrap found in the work of those who should know better. That little book has actually become a classic. If it is not now so regarded by some of his over-critical enemies, the passage of time will undoubtedly make it so.-Israel Regardie

With humor and penetrating wisdom Crowley has produced a work which should uplift the heart of all enthusiastic students of Yoga. I originally received this book as a gift from Israel Regardie in 1975. It has been my constant companion.-Christopher S. show more Hyatt

This book is timeless. Aleister Crowley has masterfully translated the Eastern method and tradition of Yoga into a form easily understood by the Western Mind. I highly recommend this book to the neophyte and adept alike.-Baron Peter von Gundlach

Aleister Crowley was born Edward Alexander Crowley in Leamington Spa, England on October 12, 1875. His parents belonged to the Plymouth Brethren, a strict fundamentalist Christian sect, so he was raised with a thorough knowledge of the Bible. He attended Trinity College at Cambridge University, but left before completing his degree. He became a show more member of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, an occult society which taught magic, qabalah, alchemy, tarot, and astrology, in 1898, but the group disbanded in 1900. In 1903, he married Rose Kelly, who began entering trance states and sending him messages from Horus, an Egyptian god. These messages formed the first three chapters of The Book of the Law, which introduced Crowley's main concept of Thelema. He founded his own occult society. He was a prolific writer, who published works on a wide variety of topics. His works include The Book of Thoth, The Vision and the Voice, 777 and Other Qabalistic Writings, The Book of Lies, Little Essays Toward Truth, and The Confessions of Aleister Crowley. He also wrote fiction including plays, novels, and poems. His fictional works include Moonchild, Diary of a Drug Fiend, The Stratagem and Other Stories, White Stains, Clouds without Water, and Hymn to Pan. Three of his compositions, The Quest, The Neophyte, and The Rose and the Cross were included in the 1917 collection The Oxford Book of English Mystical Verse. He died on December 1, 1947 at the age of 72. (Bowker Author Biography) show less
