Why is the cat fat, even though it's been abandoned during the winter? Hint: it's an adult female.
Use this book first to share giggles at Dragon's naivety (a litter box..?) and then to discuss with your children responsible pet care, including that very important first trip to the vet.

{My thoughts} – I really enjoyed this book. I have not read this series previously to reviewing it recently for Scholastic.
Dragon is a fun character that hears a cat meowing outside his door. He tries to get it to come in time and time again but it just sits there. Eventually he picks it up and takes it in his house. He then has other issues, cause he has no idea how to care for a cat.
The words on the pages are written in an east to understand manner. The illustrations help the child to better understand the story. I think this is a great book to pick up for beginner readers. It is also a wonderful book to help show children how hard it can be to be a first time pet owner.
I look forward to reviewing more books in this series in the show more near future! show less

I liked this book because of the plot and illustrations Dav Pilkey incorporated into the story. Each page is very detailed from the setting to the emotions portrayed on Dragon's face. The detail on page 41 shows Dragon is not just sad, he is distraught which is shown by his crying. This makes his emotions more identifiable and relate-able for young children. The pictures set the mood, enhance the story and draw interest to the book. Secondly, plot is a great way to teach rising action (when Dragon finds Fat Cat on page 13), climax (when Dragon loses Fat Cat 41) and falling action (page 44 when Dragon finds Cat and her kittens). There is suspense, and relate-able conflict as Dragon learns how to take care of a pet like many readers at show more that age are learning too. The message of the story is learning responsibility and how to taking care of someone else is hard work! show less
With cute colorful illustrations and simple language, the reader follows Dragon as he learns to care for his new pet cat. Warmth and humor pervade the story. Perfect for young readers (and cat lovers!)
I've read this one three times now for work. The kids just love it. Charming illustrations and a very funny, heartwarming story.
29 months - Cute young reader chapter book. Funny ending. We'll have to read this one again when O is reading.
