Description

A boy lives next door to a retired opera singer and his pet dog, Giovanni. The three are friends, but when the old man dies, friendship renews and continues between the boy and the dog as they strive to overcome the loss of the friend who brought them together in the first place.

There's a wonderful story in there. But the unusual illustrative style and book design detract from & hide it. I actually had to read it twice to appreciate it as much as I did (and I had the good luck to find a hardback library copy... but you could read it on openlibrary.org if you want).
