This was another book I picked up unexpectedly. Even more unexpectedly I could hardly put it down. Not that this is the best written autobiography ever but ME recalls her story in a very down-to-earth and engaging way - without really holding back on challenging memories.

What was also most interesting was that ME provides a lot of context to her music and many background stories to songs.

An excellent read.

Rock singer Melissa Etheridge has been the poster child for celebrity lesbians since she came out in the early 1990s; that her sexual orientation had been an open secret for some time, and that her songs carry a rock-solid, almost traditional Midwestern vibe, enabled her to avoid most of the opprobrium usually dished out to well-known homosexuals. Her career has included Grammy awards, a performance at a gay inaugural ball for President Clinton, and outspoken advocacy for gay rights. From its opening pages, where she reveals the childhood physical and sexual abuse she received from her older sister, THE TRUTH IS... is a sometimes harrowing but always honest account of a life fraught with both difficulty and triumph.
She spoke to me. It's amazing. The insights into her lyrics are enlightening. The book makes her real. She makes me believe that I can succeed, too. Success isn't just for the wealthy. Success is for me. And for her. And she and I aren't so different.
Got it from the library, and then went out and found a used copy so I could read it again and again. This is better than the biographies written by others. This is her truth and it really sticks with me better than the other one I read by someone else.
