This collection of oral history snippets is arranged thematically with chapters covering training and indoctrination; wrecks; humorous encounters; terrifying traffic stops and violence; illicit sex; bad cops and internal affairs; women troopers; trooper families; burn out; advancement; etc.
The author lives in western North Carolina, and too much of the violence against NCHP troopers has taken place in WNC, so the book has lots of vignettes set in the mountains. Written in 1988, it seems a bit dated now, and given the prices this out-of-print book commands, it is a good candidate for a revised edition that would encompass the tragic June 2008 shooting of Trooper Blanton in Haywood County.
