If you do not care about or follow the Halo storyline, than this book may not deserve five stars, but for me it was great. The Cole Protocol was a solid read, and a happy return to good storytelling. My expectations for this book were very low. The other two books in the series not written by Eric Nylund have left a bad taste in my mouth, but this was refreshing.

My only complaint is that the books seem to be losing focus of the end in the big story. We have all played the game and rounded the series off, but having a book to coincide with the finish would be greatly desired.
Of all the Halo books I've read to date (The Fall of Reach, The Flood, First Strike, Ghosts of Onyx, Contact Harvest, Evolutions) this is the only one I gave up on and didn't finish. The others were pretty much amazing (with the exception of The Flood, which was nothing more than someone writing down what someone else playing Combat Evolved was doing); this one was just a grind for me.
The cole protocol is an action pack thrill ride that constantly keeps you on the edge of your seat. You are constantly wondering if the characters are going to survive or if they are going to meet a grissly end. All together I think it is a great book that lives up to expectaions of halo books.
Never played Halo (did play Marathon), but it's a good read.
Dad gave me this when I visited. Probly not one I'd normally pick up. Will see if it's worth grabbing the rest for the Kindle
