What Is Ancient Philosophy?

by Pierre Hadot

On This Page

Description

This work revises our view of ancient philosophy -- and in doing so, proposes that we change the way we see philosophy itself. Hadot shows how the various schools, trends, and ideas of ancient Greek and Roman philosophy all strove to transform the individual's mode of perceiving and being in the world. For the ancients, philosophical theory and the philosophical way of life were inseparably linked. Hadot asks us to consider whether and how this connection might be reestablished today.

As I worked on preparing a history of philosophy class in my new job at a Mexican university high school ("prepa"), I found Pierre Hadot's consideration of the ancient tradition of philosophy as a way of life to be especially useful and stimulating. It is rich and complex but still very readable (thanks in part to Michael Chase's translation from the French, which flows quite smoothly). Anyone with even a slight interest in philosophy would be rewarded by reading this book. I will certainly seek out Hadot's other volumes, and many of the texts he refers to.
Abre show more avenidas para a reflexão.
