Three little mice get up early on Mother's Day and sneak out of the house in order to fetch their various gifts for their mother. Biggest Mouse intends to give her a wish flower, or dandelion fluff ball, while Middle Mouse plans to bring a ripe strawberry. Littlest Mouse hopes to get some Honeysuckle, but the cat who lives in the house where the flowers can be found keeps him away. Fortunately, he thinks of the perfect gift - an original song, set to the tune of Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star - on the way home...

A sweet little tale, one in which three (mice) children honor their mother by trying to find things she will truly enjoy, The Mother's Day Mice was originally published in 1986, and reprinted just this year (2017) in this new show more gift edition. The conclusion of the story is heartwarming, emphasizing the idea that sometimes it is the gifts we create ourselves that are the most welcome, while the artwork, done by Jane Brett, is colorful and cute. Recommended to anyone looking for engaging Mother's Day stories for younger children. show less
This was a pairing destined to produce a good book. I love both the author and the illustrator for their fine craftsmanship, and this story demonstrated both of their strengths, though the story was a bit simple. Sometimes a simple story well told is the best kind.
This was a great book to share with children that taught the value of caring for one another. Little mouse was the only one who did not give a material thing but it would resonate with their mother forever. That was a great message to share with children because loved ones appreciate the things that come from the heart much more than something that can be bought.
The story is ok - three little mice wake up early to find their mother presents for Mother's Day. But the real joy of this one is the pictures - very detailed and fun to look at.
On Mother's Day, three little mice went out to get their mother a present. The littlest mouse tries to be brave on their adventure to find presents. To get the perfect present for Mother, Little would have to face a black cat. They waited and waited for the cat to go away, but he wouldn't leave. Little had to find a new present. He decided to sing Mother a song. I thought this was a good book for older students. It shows that sometimes you have to use your imagination when things don't go your way.
Summary:
This is a contemporary fiction book that tells a story of three mice looking for mother's day gifts. The three mice are called Biggest Mouse, Middle Mouse, and Little Mouse. All three mice love their mother greatly and sneak out to the meadow to find their mother special gifts.
Personal Reaction:
I loved this story especially how the smallest mouse did not find anything so he gave his mother something creative and special. This was a very sweet story.
Classroom Extension Ideas:
I would read this book to my class close to mother's day. After reading this book to my class I would then have them create an arts and craft to give to their mother or who every is their care taker. Or I could also have the students in my classroom write show more their mother a poem because of the littlest mouse coming up with a sweet song for his mother. show less
Too twee for me.  And besides, I wouldn't want my little ones to take such reckless risks as these boys did.  My Clarion edition has art by Brett, but sans her famous borders with the extra details.
