A prominent Zürich businessman walks into the city's most exclusive restaurant and politely greets the professor of German, who's dining there. He then produces a revolver and shoots him dead in front of a select group of witnesses including the local police chief and the public prosecutor. Before anyone has time to react, he walks out again and carries on with his programme for the evening - the confusion is so complete that the police only catch up with him at the Tonhalle, where he's listening to a performance of Bruckner's seventh symphony (and the police have to wait for the end of the piece before moving in to arrest him...).
It's probably only Dürrenmatt who could turn so transparent an act into a murky crime story full of moral show more ambiguities, and even Dürrenmatt had trouble with it - he started to write the book in 1957, and came back to it several times over the next 25 years, but never really worked out how to bring it to a satisfactory conclusion until the 1980s, when his publishers asked him to prepare the fragment for publication as part of his complete works. In its final form, it became essentially a satire on the idea that there can be any certainty in the concept of "criminal justice" (a theme that comes up quite a bit in Dürrenmatt), as well as poking a bit of malicious fun at Swiss bourgeois life, where "culture" and "society" always get subordinated to "business".
The book sometimes feels a bit disjointed because of the long gestation period and the very confusing timeline (the narrator of the main part of the text is an alcoholic disgraced lawyer, Spät, who has clearly lost his grasp of the order in which things happened), but there are a lot of very telling observations and some good jokes, so it's still well worth a look, even if it isn't Dürrenmatt on top of his form. show less

By the end of this book, I appreciated it. But during much of the book, I felt like I was reading a mystery as written by an OuLiPo-ian writer, and it was a little too much work to decipher it relative to the value of the payoff.
Interesting concept - a very public murder; a known killer; an unknown motive; an disorientating plot; the verdict - "justice can be restored only by a crime".
The plot is very disorientating - one never knows whether we are looking back, looking forward, or are in the moment. This may be as a result of the length of time it took to complete the novel; instead the story weaves and totters like its alcoholic narrator. The twist at the end ... clever.

Not one for those with an iron-clad faith in the justice system, this is an intriguing if not wholly successful genre-busting novel. Well worth a read, even if it feels a bit dated.

Ein Zürcher Kantonsrat erschießt in einem überfüllten, von Politikern, Wirtschaftskoryphäen und Künstlern besuchten Restaurant der Stadt vor aller Augen einen Germanisten, Professor an der Universität, läßt, zu zwanzig Jahren Zuchthaus verurteilt, im Gefängnis einen jungen, mittellosen Rechtsanwalt zu sich kommen und erteilt diesem den Auftrag, seinen Fall unter der Annahme neu zu untersuchen, er sei nicht der Mörder gewesen. Der junge Anwalt, der den scheinbar sinnlosen Auftrag annimmt, erkennt zu spät, in welche Falle ihn die Justiz geraten läßt, weil er sie mit der Gerechtigkeit verwechselt.

Il tema della giustizia è già di per sé interessante.
Con Dürrenmatt è affascinante, viene smascherato, messo a nudo, osservato da tante diverse angolazioni, diventa inquietante.
Dovrebbe essere semplice stabilire che cosa sia giusto o ingiusto, una volta assunto un sistema di leggi cui fare riferimento.
Se un uomo ne uccide un altro, platealmente, in un locale pubblico, davanti a testimoni, anche se non ha un movente, per legge, è colpevole.
Ma… l’assassino è un uomo influente; …l’omicidio si svolge in Svizzera; …in un ambiente di ricchi, benpensanti, perbenisti; …l’arma del delitto non è stata trovata; …i testimoni si sono contraddetti durante le testimonianze e soprattutto …un avvocato disposto a difendere show more l’accusato, partendo dal presupposto che l’assassino potesse anche essere un altro, si è pur trovato.
E allora come la mettiamo con la Giustizia?
Meglio togliere la maiuscola e parlare di giustizia ad uso e consumo dei potenti del momento.
E già che ci siamo parliamo anche di connivenza.
L’avvocato difensore “non ebbe forse la libertà di rifiutare l’incarico di cercare un assassino che non esisteva? Non ebbe infatti il compito di trovare un assassino che non esisteva, così come l’uomo, quando mangiò il frutto dell’albero della conoscenza del bene e del male, ebbe il compito di trovare il Dio che non esisteva, il demonio?” … “Chi è colpevole? Chi dà l’incarico o chi lo accetta?”
A chi non si fosse accorto di come stanno veramente le cose, Dürrenmatt offre una magistrale lezione di educazione civica e con tono sarcastico svela come una tragedia possa facilmente scivolare in farsa. show less

Durrenmatt was born near Bern, Switzerland, the son of a Protestant clergyman. He studied philosophy and theology and originally planned to become a painter. "All of a sudden," he has said, "I began to write, and I just had no time to finish my University degree." He has called his first play, It Is Written (1947), "a wild story of Anabaptists show more during the Reformation." When it was first produced in Zurich, it caused a minor theatrical scandal because of its somewhat unorthodox sentiments. The Marriage of Mr. Mississippi, his first successful comedy, was produced in Munich in 1952 and, as adapted by Maximillian Slater with the title Fools are Passing Through, had a brief off-Broadway production in 1958. With this play he became established as one of the most popular European dramatists writing in German. His seventh play, The Visit (1956), which starred Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne on Broadway, received the N.Y. Drama Critics Circle Award in 1959. Brooks Atkinson called it "devastating.
