John Grimes is a naive young ensign, fresh out of the Academy, in transit to his first assignment when space piracy and complicated rim politics suddenly intervene. He gets played big time, learns that "right" and "wrong" are perhaps more nuanced concepts than they teach you in school, and kills a bunch of people for the first time. Not that they didn't deserve it.
This is by no means particularly compelling, but as a character Grimes seems to offer a fair amount more potential here than in the couple of other stories I've read from this series.

Ensign Grimes on his way to first ship, travelling on a merchant ship, gets sidetracked into a dubious action and wins the day and ends up on probation on a Survey Ship. A good starting story that has me reaching for the next book.
