Marriage Under Fire

Description
Why shouldn't the definition of family be broadened and modernized? What harm could be done by two consenting adults who love one another coming together to create a binding union? In this succinct analysis of the issue, Dr. James Dobson presents a compelling case against the legalization of "marriage" between homosexuals, and the dire ramifications our nation could face: Same-sex marriage will destroy the fundamental principles of marriage, parenthood, and gender. Families will be show more increasingly unstable as their definition expands to incorporate multiple "moms" or "dads." Legalization of gay marriages will lead to polygamy and other alternatives to one-man/one-woman unions. The divorce rate will be even higher, making our children less safe. Marriage Under Fire provides the foundations of a battle plan for the preservation of traditional values in our nation. Our response could not be clearer. The well-being of the family, and thus our nation, hangs in the balance. Now is the time to speak out in defense of marriage and the family. show lessTags

A pretty short and fairly good book. Dr. Dobson's rhetoric is a bit simplistic at times, but his argument against homosexual marriage is more than just homesexuality is a sin, which, in fact, is rarely mentioned. The thrust of Dobson's argument is that traditional marriage is the foundation of a good, ordered society due to its impact on children and that the adoption and sanctioning of any other form of marriage will destroy the family. (The increase in out-of-wedlock births and broken families is a prime piece of evidence in this direction.) What will ensue, Dobson ruminates, is a familyless and socialistic (although he never uses that word) society where the government becomes the parent of children (daycares and schools, etc.). This show more situation he likens to the demise of the black family since the inception of the federal welfare state in the 1960s, with all of its concomitant infelicities (crime, teen pregnancies, etc., which has been shown to stem primarily from the lack of strong father-figures). Still, I am unconvinced that a federal marriage amendment is the answer. I would prefer it remained a state issue, and, if I had my druthers, it would be solved by a New Great Awakening, and a general return to personal morality and responsibility in this nation. show less
