Another Chalet School book, which I now have in hardback form. As with so many of this series it's all the better for having the original text even if a bit long-winded in places. In this story, Carola is a determined and likeable but somewhat thoughtless teenager who is bored with travelling around the world with her aunt, and runs away to the Chalet School. She has not considered her aunt's feelings, or what the school might do with her - or even whether they would allow her to stay - but she is fortunate that things work out well.
Carola turns out to be a good addition to the school, offering good ideas and immense courage at times. Since so many of the books are about girls who do not want to go to school, or who struggle with show more fitting in, this one offers a different perspective.
Each time I read this, I find that I remember some of the plot, but have entirely forgotten other sections. One of the more interesting and well-written books of the series in my view; I find the last chapter extremely moving.
Recommended to anyone who likes school stories from the middle of the twentieth century, although it's quite hard to find used, and is no longer in print.

After the Tirol books my favourites are those set in various parts of Britain. This is an island book although that novelty has worn off and it's hardly mentioned. Carola is desperate to go to school rather than travel the world with her much older cousin, so she runs away to school. Fortunately all her expectations are realised and she has a lovely time. There are the ususal Chalet School activities: it's Sale term, the Half-term expedition encounters the usual adventure (their risk assessments are non-existant!) and another teacher 'catches' her Doctor. There is a change of character ready for next term as both Joey and Grizel are leaving...
