Excitements at the Chalet School

This book is either 43 or 38, depending on how they’re counted. It follows directly on from ‘New Mistress at the Chalet School’, and continues to feature the form known as ‘Inter V’ which has a mixture of ages and abilities, and whose form mistress is Kathie Ferrars, now in her second term.

I picked this up to read wanting something easy and relaxing. I always like delving into Chalet School life, and I didn’t really remember anything about this book as it's probably twenty years since I last read it.

But then, it’s not exactly memorable. Despite the title, it’s not an exciting book. Girls come up with suggestions to mark an upcoming occasion. There are a few minor pranks and upsets, a worthy educational expedition that I show more skimmed, a pantomime which is fraught with problems, and an unexpected visitor to the school whose story seems to vanish entirely by the end.

Fans of the series will want to read it, as I did, when re-visiting the whole set; but it’s not one I’d dip into randomly, nor would I recommend it as a starting point to the series.

A middle level entry in this series. The school is settled in Switzerland and the 'Excitements' of the title are not really evident.
