Description

Listeners who love intriguing mystery stories that are not short of unexpected turns and come with a surprising end will surely not be disappointed by Fergus Hume's The Bishop's Secret. The setting against which the plot of the novel unfolds is a small cathedral town in England, with characters that are typical of the era and of the place. Though many of the characters are stereotypes, there are some unprecedented ones that can be justly called prototypes. Among them is Mr. Baltic, the show more detective with a unique and ingenious way to handle the mystery he is faced with and the character whose actions make the plot turn out quite unusual, too. Hume excels in complex and realistic character portrayal, giving the listener the space to relate to them - you will get to love some of the characters, hate others and you will also get an ending that punishes evil and rewards goodness. show less

Peace and tranquility reign in the cathedral city of Beorminster, apart that is from the gossiping and malicious Mrs Pansey and the jealous and underhand Reverend Cargrim. 'The Bishop's Secret' is a mixture of Anthony Trollope and Wilkie Collins, with a touch of G.K.Chestorton's Father Brown. Cargrim is constantly spying on the Bishop in the hope that he will discover something to use against him. This he intends to use in a bid to improve his situation beyond his natural abilities and means.
A mysterious stranger visits the Bishop under cover of darkness and later boasts of soon becoming rich. After a while his dead body is found. He has been shot and the Bishop is suspected of the crime.
Onto the scene comes Mr Baltic who must be one of show more the most unusual detectives extant. he is part missionary and part enquiry agent and although originally employed by one of the more unpleasant characters,he finally comes up with the truth.
This story which was written in 1900 is as fresh today as when it was originally written.
