Our copy of Traveller is a non-descript plain brown hardcovered book with no dust jacket, so it has languished, unread, on the shelf for several years. Now that I have read it, I will be promoting it. This is an exciting story of life on the Canterbury Plains in New Zealand, as well as a story of redemption, along with a young man learning to take care of others (and then let go when the time comes). Tom, the main character, has his plans turned upside down when he arrives in New Zealand on an immigrant ship at the age of 16 and learns that the man he was to work for has died. On his way to his new life he stumbles upon a starving dog, and later finds a starving man. Both teach him some very important lessons. Throughout this book, we show more get to watch Tom mature, and also have the privilege of seeing what can make a person turn to a life of crime. This book will appeal to boys who like an adventure story, and to anyone who likes to read about people who are taming the wilderness. show less
