A very promising start, but I'll never know if I really liked it or not, unless I come across it in another format. This audiobook on CD was borrowed from a friend, but the audio quality was so poor in places, skipping and jumping, that I just couldn't keep on with it. Probably she had all the discs sliding around the floorboard of her car at one point.

Anyway, DNF at 11%, not rated because it's not the book's fault I couldn't listen to it.

Not at all what I had hoped for and just couldn't get into it. Predictable and somewhat contrived. ( )

George Mallory once told an American reporter that he wanted to climb Mt. Everest because it was there. On his third attempt in 1924, at age 37, he was last seen six hundred feet from the top. His body was found in 1999, and it remains a mystery whether he died going up or coming down.

Very good audiobook about the life of George Mallory, the man who may actually have been the first person on top of Mt. Everest. ( )

This is what I call a blustery tale of ambition. ( )

Epigraph
Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard

the boast of heraldy, the pomp of pow'r,
And all that beauty, all that wealth e'er gave,
Awaits alike th' inevitable hour:
the paths of glory lead but to the grave.

Book description
This is the story of a man who loved two women, and one of them killed him. Some people have dreams that are so outrageous that if they were to achieve them, their place in history would be guaranteed. Francis Drake, Robert Scott, Percy Fawcett, Charles Lindbergh, Amy Johnson, Edmund Hillary and Neil Armstrong are among such individuals. But what if one man had such a dream, and when he'd fulfilled it, there was no proof that he had achieved his ambition? "Paths of Glory" is the story of such a man. But not until you've turned the last page of this extraordinary novel, will you be able to decide if George Mallory should be added to this list of legends, because if he were, another name would have to be removed.
