"It was the rooftop concert with their hair blowing into their eyes, with Ringo in a red plastic mac, George in green trousers, John in a ladies' short fur coat. It was four musicians playing together as no four musicians ever could or ever would again." I got tears in my eyes whenever I saw pictures of them in the book and I got tears in my eyes when I reached the moment when John died and a few more times. The only time I rushed was towards the end and I skipped some of their details about the songs and money and deals. I will always love this band. A well written comprehensive look at the Beatles from start to finish and beyond. The author does have his biases (He's a John fan and not a Paul fan), but he states this up front in the introduction. The material is presented in an entertaining way that kept me turning the pages. All the Beatles are covered in this book, but there is more of an emphasis on John and Paul and not as much on George and Ringo, although the latter two are not ignored. no reviews | add a review
Updated to include Paul McCartney's knighting and the deaths of John Lennon and George Harrison. Philip Norman's biography of the Beatles is the definitive work on the world's most influential band--a beautifully written account of their lives, their music, and their times. Now brought completely up to date, this epic tale charts the rise of four scruffy Liverpool lads from their wild, often comical early days to the astonishing heights of Beatlemania, from the chaos of Apple and the collapse of hippy idealism to the band's acrimonious split. It also describes their struggle to escape the smothering Beatles' legacy and the tragic deaths of John Lennon and George Harrison. Witty, insightful, and moving, Shout! is essential reading not just for Beatles fans but for anyone with an interest in pop music. No library descriptions found. |

Through all of that, this is the singular best book I've ever read on the Beatles. Period. ( )
