MORE RELATIVES!
This time, apparently Grandfather has an estranged sister, living nearly on her own out in a giant ranch house somewhere or the other. She keeps running off the help, so of course Jessie and Violet (being the girls) go to help her--and miraculously have no trouble doing so. It's kind of hard to believe, but it's nice to have another change of scenery. And hey, I always love reading aloud books in my 'creaky old woman voice'. :D
It's kind of bizarre that Aunt Jane eventuallygives the children the ranch . Cool for them, but you have to wonder how taxes will work on that. And ownership once they get older and if any of them want to go their own ways. I doubt we'll ever find out. It's fascinating to see how the kids are show more allowed to just wonder. I do wonder when these books are actually set though. Telegrams and trains, but also buggies and no phone lines on the ranch? Sometimes it feels older than I think it actually is.
Also, old sick Aunt Jane?Totally radiation sickness from the uranium . We knew about that well before the 1957 first publishing of this book. Perhaps Warner knew as well and that's subtly the answer? Especially given the fireplace made out of uranium...
I actually enjoyed this one relatively much despite all that. This a classic series of the four sibling orphans who find refuge in a boxcar. Every book has a certain mystery topic and the topic of this books is about the past of their Aunt Jane living in her ranch. It details the four siblings going on a mysterious adventure trying to find why Aunt Jane has been living alone all her life. This book is great for children in the third grade to sixth grade. It is a great mystery book that can be used to teach about predicting and inferring. It can also be used as a writing prompt for children.
Jessie and Violet go to visit and help take care of their Great Aunt Jane on her ranch - but who is the mystery man lurking around town? Eventually Benny and Henry join the girls, and it turns out Aunt Jane's ranch is sitting on a uranium mine(!).
Yaaaawn. Form a parent perspective, this was the most boring of the Boxcar Children series yet. No suspenseful details, no mini-mystery, no tension. The kids seemed to like it, but what do they know?
Henry, Jessie, Violet, and Benny are Spending the summer out west on their Aunt Jane's ranch. Aunt Jane, their grandfather's sister, is a very unhappy woman who hasn't spoken to her brother in years.
The boxcar children are about 4 kids who live with their grandpa. The adventure begins when Grandfather gets a letter from his sister's neighbor, who also acts as her nurse. Jane is impossible and Maggie, the neighbor, is going to leave. Grandfather is worried because his sister can't live alone, so when the girls offer to go stay with her, it seems like a perfect - if temporary
I didnt like this book as much as the other ones. I dont know what about it but it was just not as good as the other boxcar children.
