I'm sorry to be so literal, but it makes no sense that mole is afraid of the dark. After all, if you're going to use animal characteristics to enhance their character, do so accurately.
And the set up that induces suspense just isn't one that I find entertaining. A sensitive child may not be able to deal with this. Unless, of course, he did manage to get to the end and find the happy ending therapeutic.
I do like the theme of subverted expectations, of "don't judge a book by it's cover," of stereotypes & prejudice. It's related to my other favorite theme, "another point of view" after all. But somehow I think this could have been a better book. Or maybe I just wasn't reading it from the right perspective, myself.

This is a really cute lower level book that I glanced at in the library. The basic story is a mole and a mouse are scared of a bear in the woods until they find out that there is nothing to be afraid about at all and the bear struggles with acceptance. Its a really good lesson about not being afraid of getting to know people and not judging others by thier looks. This book can also be used for predicting events because it has a twist at the end.
This is a cute story about unlikely friends. Two small animals go out in search of an unknown creature. The story is does not give away the ending, which ends with the two creatures befriending a bear. it is a great story for a younger audience.
