This was good. This was Dekker's writing coupled with Bright's theology, and it was terrific. A heart healed, a soul reclaimed, is more important than a million miracles of physical restoration. That is what I got from this book. This was what I wish Dekker had stayed like.
How would the world really react to God's power if it manifested itself openly like in the days of the first Christians?
This book is really excellent reading! It manages to balance some heartful, deep thought about Christianity in the modern world, with a honest to goodness thriller novel. The characters are fascinating and enjoyable (but a bit archetypal/stereotypical). It is fast paced and exciting, but emotional and sensitive at times. It entertains, but also educates and inspires. I highly suggest it as an excellent example of Christian fiction that can stand on its own and doesn't require the Christian label just to be passable. In my opinion, much 'Christian' music is awful and people only listen to it because of the label, the show more same is true with most literature, but not this book.
The best part is, I think that if you read it with an open heart and mind, it will draw you closer to God. What could be better than that? show less

Plot Summary: What happens, When & Where, Central Characters, Major Conflicts
The story starts with the rescue of a 10 year old boy named Caleb from an Ethiopian monastary. Jason and Leiah, the rescuers, take him to America. They want to continue to look after him, but he soon becomes virtually imprisoned by Father Nikolous at his Orphanage. When it is discoverd that Caleb has special healing powers, Father Nikolous begins booking public appearances for Caleb, and charging exorbitant amounts of money for admission. There is also a plot spearheaded by a presidential candidate to kill the boy, who seems to know too much about some shady activities the candidate was involved in in Ethiopia. Jason and Leiah are determined to save Caleb--but show more what of the power of God?
Style Characterisics: Pacing, clarity, structure, narrative devices, etc.
Fast paced, a few plot holes here and there, a powerful message about the power of faith and miracles, and the problem of suffering. The scene of Caleb meeting with a prominent evangelist is especially telling (a Bright cameo?). This message may be a bit to heavy handed for some. Jason and Leiah aren't the deepest of characters, and their romance is pretty predictable (though Jason's acceptance of her scars is a nice touch).
How Good is it?
Solid suspense read, affirming for Christians but probably not too appealing for the non-Christian. show less

It was okay. Found it predictable for the most part. Just one of those books that I could not get into. I kept reading it hoping it would draw me in more, but it didn't. But I read it to the end because once I start a book I like to finish it.
Great Book.
