It's been too many years since I read this, so I'll use the blurb:

Madigan Maloney's life in a small Maryland town takes on new excitement when Clint, a handsome stranger, rents a room in her grandmother's house. Madigan's mother died when she was little and she's never met her father. It isn't long before she convinces herself that Clint is her father, come to claim his long-lost daughter. Madigan confides in her best friend, Angie, who scoffs at the notion, but Madigan doesn't give up hope and continues to observe Dlint carefully. Meanwhile, she and Angie go about their usual summer activities--hanging out in the drugstore, babysitting for Angie's sister. As they do, they uncover fresh clues about Clint and his activities, some of show more them disturbing.
