The recurring scaffold poem that runs the length of the book illustrates three different children's experience in waiting for military service parents to return home from different tours of duty. Most likely an emotionally touching piece for children who experience this firsthand, the book is equally moving for anyone who has suffered a long seperation from a loved one. Also, the scaffold is a good model for some potential poetry writing for children. The happy ending of reunion is reassuring to the reader as well.
This book, While You Are Away, is a collection of thoughts that children have while their parents are away in the military. This book explores children's pain and excitement as they struggle with missing their parents and yet hope for their return. This book is touching and may help students connect their own feelings with other children whose parents are away on deployment or gone from their lives for other reasons.
A boy's dad is deployed so the boy sends mental messages to his dad. This is how he deals with the separation. Two other children are depicted who are also dealing with a deployed parent . This book would be great for children dealing with a loved one who is deployed or on an extended trip.
This is a great book for children to read if they have a family member that is gone due to being in the military. In the book it show different children who have their parent gone because of being in the military and how the children cope with the separation.

I like how the book explains deployment and reunitement of family. It's a good book to help children understand why their parent(s) went away for awhile.

This book explores the feelings family have while a loved one is deployed and waiting for them to return home. Eventhough their loved ones are far from them they are still close to their hearts.

This books is about young children missing their parents and loved ones while they are away, serving our country. The children come to find that although they miss their family members, sometimes so much it hurts, they can still feel their love no matter how far.
