I like Turtledove's books and i like the Videssos books. However, this series is a departure in that he is writing mostly from the Makuran point of view, not Videssos. While this is still set in the same world and fills out the world somewhat, I didn't enjoy it as much. I had the feeling that Videssos was going to win in the end, so it took a lot of the suspense out of the series.
