Back in the summer of 1991 I was finishing up my M Phil in Cambridge, and dropped in one day on my supervisor, who at the time was the curator of the history of science museum. He welcomed me into his office, shuffled through some papers with strange cylindrical diagrams on them, and flourished them at me: âThese,â he said, âare Charles Babbageâs original blueprints for the Difference Engine.â He had a tendency to do that. I remember one seminar on Newton where he brought in an authentic 17th-century widget, âjust like Newton would have hadâ, and showed the original ownerâs notes of how it had been used, almost casually indicating at the end that the original owner in this case show more had in fact been Isaac Newton. We would occasionally see the current Lucasian Professor, a post previously held by Babbage and Newton, trundling through the cobbled streets in his battery-driven wheelchair.
Babbage was all the rage in those days, it being the bicentenary of his birth, and with no less than three sf novels published the previous year in which Babbageâs difference engine was actually built (Michael Flynnâs In the Country of the Blind, S.M. Stirlingâs The Stone Dogs, and William Gibson & Bruce Sterlingâs The Difference Engine), and thus the computer was brought into being a century and a half before Bill Gates. Apart from those three novels and Sheffieldâs novelette, which is dated as having been finished on December 31, 1991, there arenât many stories with that theme, though steampunk as a genre keeps on going. In all three of those novels, the difference engine is at least partly responsible for revolutionising society.
Sheffield, however, takes it in a different direction: what if it were simply built in 1850 as a project of an eccentric couple in the farther flung reaches of the British Empire, and then forgotten? His unnamed narrator and his old New Zealander friend Bill Rigley team up to find out the truth behind the manuscripts located on a farm at the back end of nowhere. In fact, the largest surviving fragment of Babbageâs analytical engine was indeed discovered, along with various papers now in the Wanganui Museum, on a farm in New Zealand in the late 1970s by Garry Tee, to whom âGeorgia On My Mindâ is dedicated and who âis no more Bill Rigley than I [Charles Sheffield] am the narrator of this story.â However, in our timeline the Babbage material reached New Zealand via Australia in the hands of Babbageâs son and grandson when they emigrated, rather than being constructed from scratch.
Tee made his real-life discovery about the time that Charles Sheffieldâs first wife died, in 1977, and the narrator of âGeorgia on My Mindâ has had a similar recent loss. The theme of nostalgia and loss runs strongly and powerfully through the story, permeating the excitement of the two friends as they look through the papers of Luke and Louisa Derwent from over a century before. Anyone who has ever been bereaved will sympathise with the narratorâs sharp intake of breath as a picture of Louisa reminds him of his dead wife. The setting of New Zealand is also richly portrayed, in the days before Peter Jackson made it as iconic as it now has become. And so we are not really prepared for what happens next.
It seems that the Derwents â a married couple, exiled from England because they were also, scandalously, half-brother and half-sister â had made contact with aliens â or at least intelligent non-humans â on Macquarie Island. One last letter written in 1855 reveals that Luke and the dying Louisa set off to the permanent base of the âheteromorphsâ; there is just about enough information in the manuscripts to enable the identification of the site of that permanent base as being South Georgia, in the Atlantic Ocean. (The storyâs title has nothing to do with the U.S. state of Georgia, let alone the former Soviet Republic of the same name, where I will be this time next week as I write these words.)
And so, just as the Derwentsâ story finishes with preparation for a long and dangerous journey, âGeorgia On My Mindâ ends with our narrator and Bill Rigley preparing to follow the Derwents to South Georgia. But they will not be alone; word has leaked out, and a host of people from MIT, Livermore and the hard science fiction community are rumoured to also be converging on the island. For some readers, this somewhat recursive twist at the end spoils the story. Not for me. I read it as a tribute, 14 years on, to the support Sheffield drew from his professional and literary colleagues at the time of his bereavement, and a good end to a story whose plot was never intended to be fully resolved.

Coming back to it two decades later, I still loved this story for bringing me back to my history of science days, the most intellectually interesting work I have ever done in my life. I wondered also if E.J. Swift was slightly inspired by it for The Coral Bones. And I think we can all do with a hidden history occasionally. show less

My reaction to reading this collection in 1997. Spoilers may follow.
âIntroductionâ-- Short, no nonsense, no-frill introduction for a collection of stories ranging from âsilly to personal and serious.â
âThe Feynman Solutionâ -- The mechanism of time travel is never rationalized beyond the point of artist Colin Trantham saying heâs a sort of positron which physicist Richard Feynman described as an electron traveling back in time. The story involves Colin, suffering from a brain tumor (the major scientific interest of the story is the descriptions of cancer therapies, their successes, methods of operation, and failings), seeing visions of increasingly ancient and mostly extinct life which he draws with his usual precision. show more The relationship between Colin and his paleontologist sister Julia and his oncologist James Wollaston (eventually Juliaâs lover) was well handled. The Tranthams, like Bey Wolf in Sheffieldâs Proteus novels, love to quote all kinds of things from Samuel Johnson to movies.
âThe Beeâs Kissâ -- Like Sheffieldâs âC-Changeâ, this story involves aliens who are concealing things. A very skilled voyeur is forced by a tyrant (after the voyeur is caught spying on him) to spy on some enigmatic aliens, the Sigil. It turns out the aliens have become alarmed after learning humans use sexual reproduction. The Sigil are asexual and use a parasitic means to reproduce like Earthâs sphinx wasp. This story has good psychological insight into a voyeur.
âMillenniumâ -- Minor story about a Christian survivalist gloating about God bringing Judgment Day to different religions at different times because they donât all use the Christian calendar.
âFifteen-Love on the Dead Manâs Chestâ -- Humorous story about tennis and lawyers on the moon and the search for a putative immortality serum hid by a dead man. The notes for this story indicate that in the late 1970s Sheffieldâs kids gave him a list of topics they found funny (they were young kids so the topics tend to be disgusting). Sheffield promised to write a story on each topic, his âsewageâ series, and so far has written 10 stories, including this one, featuring the lawyers Henry Carver and Waldo Burmeister.
âDeep Safariâ -- An exciting tale of big game hunting on the miniature level.
âBeyond the Golden Roadâ -- Sheffield claims this story is âpure science fictionâ though it appeared in the fantasy anthology Arabesques originally. I say itâs straight historical fiction since, as Sheffield points out, it has nothing in it that was not known or believed in about 1250. Specifically, this is the story of Johannes of Magdeburg, a man of shaky faith and great learning (and quite taken with the concept of zero imported into Europe by Fibonacci in 1202), sent by a papal legate to investigate rumors about Kublai Khan (worms that spin golden thread, intelligent centipedes that guard a temple, and fabulous animals including man-size ants who operate diamond mines). The story is set partly in the Taklamakan Desert of western China, an area Sheffield says he is obsessed with and used for his âThe Courts of Xanaduâ. Accompanying him is the gifted linguist and slave Dari who invites himself along to help the 28 year old Johannes who he admires greatly. En route to the Khanâs court, they meet the beautiful and intelligent woman â Dari is convinced sheâs a âwitch-womanâ â who immediately becomes interested in Johannes though only Dari sees that sheâs interested in Johannes and how she gets closer to him. Nataree is destined to marry the Khan, and Dari finds her talent for learning languages is even greater than his. It is towards the storyâs end, when Dari and Johannes save the Khanâs life from a poisoning attempt, that all the talk of Dariâs love (he is the narrator) for Johannes is sexual and not platonic. Daris is resentful that he has lost Johannes to a rival when he could not even speak his love to Johannes due to Christian prohibitions about homosexuality, the âChurch, with its cold Christ, its stern laws, its bleak Heaven. ⌠nothing for anyone who loves.â The best, and very memorable line of the story is about Nataree: âBut now I suspect every woman is a witch-woman, casting their spells on men.â
âHealth Care Systemâ -- This is a very frightening story that reminded me a bit of Jack Williamsonâs âWith Folded Handsâ in that it is a tale of technology created for a good â here a variety of medical technologies from organ transplants, medical databases, and new drugs to sinister mind control implants â but ends up horribly oppressive. Granted, this is a technology perverted by Miriam Greenwood and not robots, and she preys on Thomas Matlockâs obsession with money and women to support her obsession with life extension. Justifiable motives â sex, money, and life â here lead to thorough moral and physical corruption.
âHumanity Testâ -- In his afterword, Sheffield says this story was a response to Tom Godwinâs classic âThe Cold Equationsâ. Genetically engineered chimpanzees are on trial for horribly mutilating a starshipâs crew, killing others, and sabotaging the ship. It is revealed at storyâs end that the mutilations (amputations) were done to save the crew members who survived a catastrophic accident on the ship. Amputation as a way to lessen the load on a life support system is probably the part of the story that is a response to Godwinâs story.
âThat Strain Again ⌠â -- Slight story about aliens from a planet on no axial tilt. They come to Vermont in the fall and, upon seeing the turning leaves, think they have infected Earthâs biosphere with a microorganism. They leave Earth.
âDestroyer of Worldsâ -- An exciting mystery involving a biologistâs disappearance, the private detective hired to find him, the wealthy philatelist she enlists to help her, and the fanatical group of space enthusiasts who are creating their own biosphere. (I was surprised to learn the first sealed, self-sustaining biosphere was created in 1967. I have no reason to doubt Sheffield on this.) Most of their biospheres are less efficient than Biosphere One â Earth. But one is more efficient and threatens to take over Earthâs ecology if it is loosed. Narrator and detective Rachel Banks develops a gradual fondness for Tom Walton, the philatelist (after some understandable resentment at his wealth and how it causes him to prescribe courses of action only available to the wealthy â like turning down her client because the biologist may not want to be found). However, after Marcia Seretto (the charismatic leader of the biosphere cult) dies after Walton and Banks destroy Biosphere Nine, Walton takes over her work, although more cautiously. I donât think the story quite justifies the parallel Sheffield tries to do at storyâs end: Walton becoming Seretto, and Banks looking upon Waltonâs change in personality as a monster sheâs created like Serettoâs Biosphere Nine. She fears she may come to understand Serettoâs reluctance to destroy her project, her child, her monster. The parallel seems strained, and Walton seems much more responsible than Seretto and merely administering an area of science too dangerous to be left to casual, hidden amateurs.
âThe Fifteenth Station of the Crossâ -- Sheffield, in his afterword, gives the exact date and origin of this story: an April 5, 1992 reading of Harlan Ellisonâs âCorpseâ with the sentence âThe years from twelve to thirty during which nothing was heard of Jesus of Nazareth. They are known as the âlostâ years of Jesusâ. In this story, Jesus spends part of that time in the future, snatched by Puladi, tyrant and controller of the world who can see everything via his monitoring technology. He hopes Jesus will heal him, which he partly does physically. Morally and spiritually, Jesus affects his salvation, and Puladi lets himself die after dismantling the âworld control system.â
âTrapalandaâ -- This story is a great deal like Sheffieldâs âThe Courts of Xanaduâ. Both concern anomalies (here an inexplicable vortex of winds sustained by an unknown source of energy) of possibly alien origins. This particular anomaly rests around the Argentina-Chile border in the area called the Kingdom of the Winds. Trapalanda is âthe Patagonian version of El Doradoâ. Both stories are narrated in the first person and are as much concerned with the relationships between expedition members and sponsors as in finding the treasure. Here the blind, brilliant John Kenyon Martindale (named after Sheffieldâs father-in-law, John Kenyon Martindale Sanderson, who is a sf fan and knew H. G. Wells) spots the anomaly. He hires narrator Klaus Jacobi to guide him to the legendary Trapalanda. His wife Shirley finds Martindale too thoughtful and gentle and seeks the bed of Jacobi who she somewhat incorrectly thinks is cold, selfish, and sexist â she likes these traits. Jacobiâs sexual relations with his own wife Helga are even more strained. She was tortured as an infant and sexual intimacy is not pleasant for her, and the couple no longer has sex. As is usual in these stories (and sort of true in âThe Courts of Xanaduâ) the quest is successful. Trapalanda does hold an alien artifact: a instantaneous transport device to another part of the universe and powered by a âgravitational line singularityâ. Finding it has two effects, Klausâ exposure to it ages him 35 years. Second, and more important, Martindale and Helga go through the portal. Klaus is troubled by Helga, whom he does seem to love, being physically more comfortable with Martindale and leaving with him. He vows to return to Trapalanda and go through to portal to find Helga. I donât think Sheffield fully justifies the poignancy heâs going for at storyâs end. Itâs not quite clear whether Klaus is worthy of Helgaâs love or why, exactly, Helga prefers Martindale. Perhaps Martindale really is more gentle and better than Klaus but this isnât fully shown. Perhaps both come together because they are crippled in some way. Of course, Klaus is also troubled by the ambiguity of the situation, and the above questions so perhaps Sheffield wanted some questions unresolved. Helga may have accompanied Martindale out of a sense of adventure too.
âObsolete Skillâ -- An amusing story that says a lot about the world of sf and its writers. A sf writer wakes up after a cryonic suspension (paid for by fans) of 197 years. He is the author of several named works that are sf works slightly renamed: Tales of New Space (Larry Nivenâs Tales of Known Space), Spaceship Troopers (Robert A. Heinleinâs Starship Troopers), The Nude Sun (Isaac Asimovâs The Naked Sun), and Timeskip (perhaps Gregory Benfordâs Timescape). Unfortunately, all his polymath knowledge is of little use because knowledge, due to electronic brain links with massive databases, is an âobsolete skillâ. But our author hero refuses a life of living on the future dole and finds one bit of his acquired knowledge to be of use: hypnosis. He uses it to control his reviver. The afterword to this story is revealing. As the protagonist in Robert Sheckleyâs Immortality Inc found out, suddenly being catapulted into the future is humbling since itâs very unlikely any of your skills will be in demand. Sheffield thinks the only people future generations will think worth reviving are those who âhave spent much of their lives thinking about the futureâ. Responding to questions about who the storyâs narrator is based on, what sf polymath â Heinlein, Frederik Pohl, Larry Niven, David Brin, Sheffield himself â Sheffield responds that itâs âevery SF writerâ, and he doesnât mean just males.
âGeorgia on My Mindâ -- This is a good story and reminded me a lot of Michael Flynnâs In the Country of the Blind (in both novel and short story) in that both tales involve the cryptohistory of the use of the Babbage Engine in the 19th century. (I was also reminded of Flynnâs âEifelheimâ in that both stories involve uncovering historical traces of aliens). The story of the historical account of building a working Babbage engine and discovering the alien Heteromorphs, the detective work substantiating these claims, and the possibility that the aliens still exist on South Georgia Island are all exciting and intriguing. What makes the story really unique, though, is its peculiar mixture of autobiography, reality, and fiction. A piece of Babbageâs Difference Machine really was discovered in New Zealand by one Garry Tee, the inspiration for the Bill Wrigley character. Other real scientists show up as barely disguised (Sheffield gives their identity in the Afterword) or not at all disguised. The Gene character is Gene Golub, the âworldâs best numerical analystâ (he decodes a list of numbers to uncover the location of a possible alien base on South Georgia). Computer scientists Marvin Minsky and Danny Hillis. The above sf writers are mentioned as are Ada Lovelace and, of course, Charles Babbage. Sheffield says the narrator is not him with two exceptions. He really did work with the âearly and intractableâ digital computer DEUCE described at storyâs end. Second, the pain the narrator feels at the illness and death of Louisa Derwent (her and her husband Luke are half-brother and sister and flee England due to the scandal) mirrors the pain and loss Sheffield experienced at the death of his first wife as he has briefly mentioned elsewhere. show less

âDestroyer of Worldsâ -- An exciting mystery involving a biologistâs disappearance, the private detective hired to find him, the wealthy philatelist she enlists to help her, and the fanatical group of space enthusiasts who are creating their own biosphere. (I was surprised to learn the first sealed, self-sustaining biosphere was created in 1967. I have no reason to doubt Sheffield on this.) Most of their biospheres are less efficient than Biosphere One â Earth. But one is more efficient and threatens to take over Earthâs ecology if it is loosed. Narrator and detective Rachel Banks develops a gradual fondness for Tom Walton, the philatelist (after some understandable resentment at his wealth and how it causes him to prescribe courses of action only available to the wealthy â like turning down her client because the biologist may not want to be found). However, after Marcia Seretto (the charismatic leader of the biosphere cult) dies after Walton and Banks destroy Biosphere Nine, Walton takes over her work, although more cautiously. I donât think the story quite justifies the parallel Sheffield tries to do at storyâs end: Walton becoming Seretto, and Banks looking upon Waltonâs change in personality as a monster sheâs created like Serettoâs Biosphere Nine. She fears she may come to understand Serettoâs reluctance to destroy her project, her child, her monster. The parallel seems strained, and Walton seems much more responsible than Seretto and merely administering an area of science too dangerous to be left to casual, hidden amateurs.
âThe Fifteenth Station of the Crossâ -- Sheffield, in his afterword, gives the exact date and origin of this story: an April 5, 1992 reading of Harlan Ellisonâs âCorpseâ with the sentence âThe years from twelve to thirty during which nothing was heard of Jesus of Nazareth. They are known as the âlostâ years of Jesusâ. In this story, Jesus spends part of that time in the future, snatched by Puladi, tyrant and controller of the world who can see everything via his monitoring technology. He hopes Jesus will heal him, which he partly does physically. Morally and spiritually, Jesus affects his salvation, and Puladi lets himself die after dismantling the âworld control system.â
âTrapalandaâ -- This story is a great deal like Sheffieldâs âThe Courts of Xanaduâ. Both concern anomalies (here an inexplicable vortex of winds sustained by an unknown source of energy) of possibly alien origins. This particular anomaly rests around the Argentina-Chile border in the area called the Kingdom of the Winds. Trapalanda is âthe Patagonian version of El Doradoâ. Both stories are narrated in the first person and are as much concerned with the relationships between expedition members and sponsors as in finding the treasure. Here the blind, brilliant John Kenyon Martindale (named after Sheffieldâs father-in-law, John Kenyon Martindale Sanderson, who is a sf fan and knew H. G. Wells) spots the anomaly. He hires narrator Klaus Jacobi to guide him to the legendary Trapalanda. His wife Shirley finds Martindale too thoughtful and gentle and seeks the bed of Jacobi who she somewhat incorrectly thinks is cold, selfish, and sexist â she likes these traits. Jacobiâs sexual relations with his own wife Helga are even more strained. She was tortured as an infant and sexual intimacy is not pleasant for her, and the couple no longer has sex. As is usual in these stories (and sort of true in âThe Courts of Xanaduâ) the quest is successful. Trapalanda does hold an alien artifact: a instantaneous transport device to another part of the universe and powered by a âgravitational line singularityâ. Finding it has two effects, Klausâ exposure to it ages him 35 years. Second, and more important, Martindale and Helga go through the portal. Klaus is troubled by Helga, whom he does seem to love, being physically more comfortable with Martindale and leaving with him. He vows to return to Trapalanda and go through to portal to find Helga. I donât think Sheffield fully justifies the poignancy heâs going for at storyâs end. Itâs not quite clear whether Klaus is worthy of Helgaâs love or why, exactly, Helga prefers Martindale. Perhaps Martindale really is more gentle and better than Klaus but this isnât fully shown. Perhaps both come together because they are crippled in some way. Of course, Klaus is also troubled by the ambiguity of the situation, and the above questions so perhaps Sheffield wanted some questions unresolved. Helga may have accompanied Martindale out of a sense of adventure too.
âObsolete Skillâ -- An amusing story that says a lot about the world of sf and its writers. A sf writer wakes up after a cryonic suspension (paid for by fans) of 197 years. He is the author of several named works that are sf works slightly renamed: Tales of New Space (Larry Nivenâs Tales of Known Space), Spaceship Troopers (Robert A. Heinleinâs Starship Troopers), The Nude Sun (Isaac Asimovâs The Naked Sun), and Timeskip (perhaps Gregory Benfordâs Timescape). Unfortunately, all his polymath knowledge is of little use because knowledge, due to electronic brain links with massive databases, is an âobsolete skillâ. But our author hero refuses a life of living on the future dole and finds one bit of his acquired knowledge to be of use: hypnosis. He uses it to control his reviver. The afterword to this story is revealing. As the protagonist in Robert Sheckleyâs Immortality Inc found out, suddenly being catapulted into the future is humbling since itâs very unlikely any of your skills will be in demand. Sheffield thinks the only people future generations will think worth reviving are those who âhave spent much of their lives thinking about the futureâ. Responding to questions about who the storyâs narrator is based on, what sf polymath â Heinlein, Frederik Pohl, Larry Niven, David Brin, Sheffield himself â Sheffield responds that itâs âevery SF writerâ, and he doesnât mean just males.
âGeorgia on My Mindâ -- This is a good story and reminded me a lot of Michael Flynnâs In the Country of the Blind (in both novel and short story) in that both tales involve the cryptohistory of the use of the Babbage Engine in the 19th century. (I was also reminded of Flynnâs âEifelheimâ in that both stories involve uncovering historical traces of aliens). The story of the historical account of building a working Babbage engine and discovering the alien Heteromorphs, the detective work substantiating these claims, and the possibility that the aliens still exist on South Georgia Island are all exciting and intriguing. What makes the story really unique, though, is its peculiar mixture of autobiography, reality, and fiction. A piece of Babbageâs Difference Machine really was discovered in New Zealand by one Garry Tee, the inspiration for the Bill Wrigley character. Other real scientists show up as barely disguised (Sheffield gives their identity in the Afterword) or not at all disguised. The Gene character is Gene Golub, the âworldâs best numerical analystâ (he decodes a list of numbers to uncover the location of a possible alien base on South Georgia). Computer scientists Marvin Minsky and Danny Hillis. The above sf writers are mentioned as are Ada Lovelace and, of course, Charles Babbage. Sheffield says the narrator is not him with two exceptions. He really did work with the âearly and intractableâ digital computer DEUCE described at storyâs end. Second, the pain the narrator feels at the illness and death of Louisa Derwent (her and her husband Luke are half-brother and sister and flee England due to the scandal) mirrors the pain and loss Sheffield experienced at the death of his first wife as he has briefly mentioned elsewhere. show less
Brilliant collection of stories, from short shorts to novelettes including the title story which I remember reading when it came out originally but had completely forgotten.
