Description
Winner of 'New Testament Book of the Year, Biblical Archaeology Society 1999' A masterly new evaluation of Paul: the man, his work and his world. Professor Roetzel breaks new ground in exploring some aspects of Paul which have remained shadowy: his sexual asceticism, his preoccupation with holiness - Holy Spirit, holy community and holy ethos - the evolution of his theology, and his emergence as a legendary figure. Roetzel also furthers our understanding of the culture, the social world and show more the political realities of Paul's time. show lessTags

A concise reconstruction of Paul that deals with everything from sexual asceticism, the evolution of his theology, to his emergence as a legendary figure. Overall, I thought it was broad enough to cover ground that many introductory Pauline texts don't cover and yet short enough that it did not overwhelm. Rather it whet one's appetite to dig even deeper into exploring both the man and the myth we call Paul.

Calvin Roetzel's The Letters of Paul: Conversations in Context has long been established as the most effective textbook for introducing Paul and Paul's writings to undergraduate and seminary students. This new edition updates the text to include new scholarship developed after the fourth edition's release in 1998. The result is a wonderful basic show more textbook on Paul's letters. show less
