The best thing about it is that some of the tales were unfamiliar to me. I love Carle's work, of course, but this just felt dissonant to me... his style isn't what I think of when I think Aesop. The retellings were fine, objectively, but somehow seemed a little too simplified to suit me. And besides, there are so many other good editions of Aesop, choose one of them instead.
This book is a collection of 12 of Aesop’s fables retold and illustrated by Eric Carle. Each story has a different lesson that can be learned from reading it. Most of the fables contain two animals and there is usually a conflict between them. When Carle retold Aesop’s fables, he added a few things to each story without changing the major theme or message of the story. In a couple of the stories, the lesson that can be learned is to not always be so trusting of others. Aesop’s fables are retold in a way that is easy to understand while still keeping with the tradition of sharing fables.
