Swatchways and Little Ships

by Maurice Griffiths

Description

For over fifty years Maurice Griffiths cruised in a variety of small yachts amongst the rivers and creeks of the Thames Estuary and round the coasts of Suffolk, Essex and Kent. In this classic book he tells of the boats he owned in that time, and shows how the experience gained with these small craft helped to turn him into a dedicated yacht designer. There is more than an echo here of the magic the author found amongst his beloved swatchways, so although this book contains much lore and show more advice for the yacht designer, discerning owner and builder, it is also a book of delightful reminiscences. show less

First published in 1971; Swatchways & Little Ships became an immediate favorite, re-issued every five or ten years and earning Maurice Griffiths a loyal readership. Starting his sailing in the 1920 Maurice (MG to his friends and loyal fans) became the editor of the English Yachting Monthly, a role he continued until retirement.

This book, one of eight Griffiths authored, is a charming collection of sixteen chapters on cruising the Thames Estuary and the river Blackwater creeks, on yacht design and thoughtful opinions on the practice and art of sailing.

The author prefaces his book with the claim that “This, then, is a simple chronicle of minor adventures."

It is in fact much bigger, broader and deeper than that and will hold any reader show more ‘with salt in his veins’ spellbound. show less
