Aisling Grey is back-and in more trouble than ever. She thought being a courier would be easy. It's not. She thought being a Guardian would come naturally. It doesn't. She thought she could get out of being a wyvern's mate. She can't. And she never thought she'd be irresistible to men. But she is..

I was all set to give this one four stars just like its predecessor until I got to the part when Drake throws Aisling into the limo near the end. At this point Aisling becomes incredibly selfish and immature.
I couldn't believe her behaviour. She made an oath, a commitment to not just Drake but to his green dragons. She acts like a selfish brat worrying about a career she hasn't even started yet, when her mate is about to lose everything with the possibility of even going to war.
And then she runs away and walks away from him. Again. Despite knowing the importance of her role to his species and the possible ramifications of her abandonment of her duties to both the dragons and humans. Ugh. I know this is supposed to be a light-hearted show more series but that really p*ssed me off. show less

Holy cow. This book was even better than the first and more fiery than you can ever imagine. Katie MacAlister has created a whole new world for paranormal fantasy featuring the romance between a human and a dragon. Thank god I was able to snatch this book from a friend at school because I was blown away by this fantastic tale.
The cover is probably the only thing I didn't like about the book. Considering how amazing MacAlister's style is, I've never been a huge fan of the cover design ...more Holy cow. The cover is probably the only thing I didn't like about the book. Considering how amazing MacAlister's style is, I've never been a huge fan of the cover designs. But I definitely love the title. It's sensual, sultry, and gives off several hints of seduction. And the characters? Who doesn't love Aisling's fierce and confident personality, Jim's amazing sense of humor, and of course, the arrogant, selfish but all time sexy dragon Drake, who has the power to send you to your knees with his sexual prowess.
The romance heats up even more than in the last book and and so does the sexual tension...MacAlister has outdone herself with Fire Me Up. It is most definitely a must have and should go on your to-read list ASAP. show less

Halfway through the book, I was worried. Katie MacAlister is constantly in danger of letting her sense of comedy overwhelm her novels - losing the meat of characters, momentum, tension, etc., in her desire to punch out something irreverant, spunky, and lightly entertaining. For a while, I was really worried that she was going to ruin Fire Me Up and Aisling Grey by turning it into a (not necessarily funny) sketch routine.
But she didn't!
What counterbalances the broad comedy so well in Fire Me Up is the sheer unfairness of Aisling's situation - you'd have to be quite a cynic to dream up all of the awful things that she experiences in this book. She is blamed, suspected, betrayed, misjudged, and patronized at every turn.
This novel has a show more satisfying narrative arc, while also leaving room for the situation to change in later novels as Aisling and the other characters evolve. The action centers around a conference of Otherworlders in Budapest, and a couple of murders committed there. Once again Aisling is a suspect and scrambling to clear her name.
She's also looking for a mentor, adapting to her new role as a Guardian and hoping to learn enough to do the job right. And Drake appears as well - for a not-so-coincidentally timed conference of dragon wyverns. A lot of things happen on that front - Aisling finds herself embroiled in dragon politics, intra- and extra-sept, and back in a love/hate sort of relationship with Drake. (I, too, had a love/hate relationship with him in this book).
By the end I was totally enthralled and happy with the book and I can't wait to read the next one. show less

I have a thing for dragons, and smart Alec characters. So this series really suits me. I enjoyed the interactions of the characters and the mystery. Jim's too funny, Drake... wanted to slap him a few times. All in all, this will always be a top book in my library.
I liked this book better than the first in the series. I thought the plot was more complex and engaging, which surprised me. I also loved the romantic elements and the development of the relationship between the hero and heroine -- right up until 10 pages from the end. I really like the heroine's voice, and the 1st person POV works very well here. I was also intrigued by the way the author kept complicating things for the heroine.Overall, a satisfying read. (B)
Aisling Grey traveled to Budapest to accomplish two things. The first was to get back in her uncle's good graces by completeing a courier job of a priceless amulet for him. The second was to attend GODTAM (a conference of otherworldly beings) and hopefully find a mentor to teach her to be a guardian. No where on her itinerary had Aisling included an attempted mugging as soon as she left the train station or a surprise run in with a certain too sexy for her peace of mind wyvern in human form. Unfortunately for Aisling very little ever goes as she plans and those problems are only the beginning. Soon Aisling is embroiled in yet another murder mystery with a host of very unusual suspects including a professional virgin, an annoying Diviner show more and a host of naked, amorous incubi. Will Aisling and her demon dog, Jim, be able to solve the mystery of who is murdering guardians before Aisling herself is once again blamed?
I have never been the type to enjoy murder mysteries and I do not usually find myself drawn to serial romances that feature the same main character. However, I find myself making exceptions to both of these usual reading habits and absolutely loving the Aisling Grey books. I enjoyed this second book even more than I did the first and I am really looking forward to the next in the series. Aisling makes a very believable, funny and compelling character. I love her relationships with both Jim and Drake, as different as they are. I really think that the way Aisling can understand the why of the way Drake thinks and operates but is human enough to still get angry is great. It's a contridiction that I can totally identify with myself. I highly recommend this story to anyone who likes demons, dragons, myseteries and/or romances. show less

This is the 2nd book in the Aisling Grey, Guardian series. My review of book 1, You Slay Me, can be found at this entry in my blog.
The story takes place in Budapest. Aisling is there to attend the GODTAM conference (Guardians, Oracles, Diviners, Theurgists and Mages) in the hopes of finding a Guardian mentor so she can learn more about her powers and how to control them. As usual, she's accompanied by her demon Jim, a lovable, if a bit mouthy and troublesome, big black Newfie dog.
Her mate Drake, wyvern of the Green Dragon sept, whom we also met in You Slay Me, has followed her there, moving his scheduled "peace talks" with the other 3 dragon septs to the same city where Aisling is... because as his mate, Drake claims, she's an show more important part of the sept.
Of course, trouble also follows Aisling everywhere she goes, and "trouble" makes a grand entrance in Budapest, as it did in France. Aisling finds herself in some pretty hot water—both literally and figuratively—and has promised to help the Otherworld police, the L'au-delà, find out who's been killing some of the Guardians so she herself isn't charged of the crimes. She's always just popping up in the wrong place at the wrong time it seems!
Where the story goes a bit overboard for me at times is with some of the romance scenes, and the mushy gushy way that Aisling sometimes goes on about Drake like a love-sick school girl with a crush. It's like "gag-a-rama"! ;) But this is something that bugs me about a lot of MacAlister's books, including the Dark Ones series. Fortunately, the rest of the story is often interesting enough to keep me reading... I just hate too much romance in my books without something to even it out.
Despite all Aisling's troubles, everything works out for her in the end... well nearly everything. A few things left unresolved leave the reader anxiously looking forward to the next book in the series, Light My Fire to find out what happens next. (Fortunately, that book is already waiting here on my shelf, though it might be several months before I can get to it.) show less

- Dedication
- I am always grateful to a number of people by the time I’m done with a book—my editor and agent for encouraging me to continue to write, the readers who send me letters urging me to write faster (which make me giggle), an... (show all)d my friends and family who put up with my general crankiness while I’m writing. All of that is true with this book, but in addition, I’m also profoundly appreciative of Laura Toth’s help with the Hungarian phrases and words used, and for being the inspiration for setting this book in her beloved Budapest.
