Although frightened by the secrets she knows he is hiding, Megan is compelled to him by a force she can't explain--or resist. Ross tries to deny the ancient instincts clamoring for him to take Megan as his mate, for to do so would sentence her to a lifetime of sorrow. I haven't read many books about shifters--either in paranormal romance or horror, for whatever reason--but I really liked the way this author handled that element of the work. Without having it totally take over the story, it also wasn't simply taken for granted, whereas it often seems like the paranormal really is taken for granted in this genre. This was also a pretty balanced book with just enough twists to keep it from quite being predictable from moment to moment, and the characters weren't just engaging and likeable, but smart.
I'd certainly recommend this to readers of paranormal romance or folks who want to dip their toe into shifter romance, and I imagine I'll be keeping an eye out for more of York's books since this was a show more relaxing escape. show less

As a scientist and a non practicing doctor, the heroin has spent her life proving to herself and her abusive father that she's better than either of them give her credit for. She's timid and will avoid conflict when she can, remaining quiet about her unhappiness with her job and her crack head sister. But when she makes a house call to do a genetic makeup for a client, she finds herself in some serious conflict. The hero has been shot while investigating the disappearances of 2 young girls and now has a high fever and a bad infection. She can't physically make herself leave the man when doing so will surely mean his death. In his feverish delirium, he pulls a gun on her, rambles on about mates and the fact that she's got to leave before show more it's too late. Despite her unease with her patient she stays and nurses him back to health. When he comes to, he's less than welcoming. The hero has lived a tortured life starting with his abusive father and the fact that his werewolf genes has caused the death of his brothers and sisters. He's terrified of finding his mate, the one woman whom he will do anything to possess because he's terrified of becoming his father. So, despite the instant and passionate attraction he feels for the heroine, he's very cold and distant for the most of the book. Personally, I wouldn't have the strength to stay around after being treated the way the hero treated the heroine but she was stubborn and selfless to a fault. Slowly and bit by bit the hero begins to warm to her and when his murder case and his love affair clash together, he'll do anything to protect his woman. I absolutely loved this story. I loved the hero. He was so tortured and cold yet strangely warm at times. You can so feel his internal struggle as he tries to find his instincts in a bid to keep her safe. The heroine was so loyal and despite her fear for him and of him at times, she never gave up on him. This book was the perfect mix of drama and romance without being melodramatic. The issues are real but their bond is real as well. I loved reading about them trying to figure it all out. Super awesome read. show less
OK so this book was a different take into the world of werewolves, of course as in a lot of books based on werewolves, the werewolves are born. And that they have on mate in life. Nothing new in this book. Though the way that the author made it, is that the living child ratio is pretty slim, and that it really tears families apart rather than bring the ever lasting love other books bring. However, this book was a very enjoyable read because besides the fact that there is only one sex scene, and that they didn't just dive into bed together immediately was refreshing, but there was intrigue and danger lurking around the corner, as well as a little mystery as well. It's an interesting start to a series, and I do plan on continuing this series.
Picked this at the used bookstore unaware I had read it before. So I read it again since I didn't remember how it ended.
I liked this book. It was different in that there weren't hoards of werewolves with a whole hidden society and all, just one family from an ancestor who had asked the celtic gods for a special gift. I enjoyed both the hero and heroine. Both were very well written. The reaction of the heroine to finding out the guy was a werewolf was pretty good in that she didn't just say "oh cool" but she was scared and actually had to think about her reaction.
I'm going to try the next one.

This started off as a bit ho-hum but built into an interesting story with characters I cared about. With a slightly different take on the entire werewolf idea, a mythical connection and a genetic connection. Megan Sheridan works as a genetic researcher and is asked to get a sample from Private Investigator Ross Marshall. He works with missing people cases mostly and this and his construction skills have allowed him to invest in a remote property.
It's a fun read. Watching the characters try to resist the urge to be together is fun.

Not bad. The overall storyline was good, but it was a little to melodramatic and soap operaish. The dialog left a lot to be desired. There were a lot of exchanges like this: "Ross." "Megan." "Ross!" "Megan!" "Oh God, Ross!" I kept wishing they would say more than each other's names. Also, some of the things they did seemed a bit unrealistic, or unreasonable. I'm still not sure why Ross felt he needed to search Megan's house, and I was a bit creeped out by his lingering over her stuff. Yeah, I get that he was supposed to have chosen her as his "mate," and that no other woman will do, and he will always want her, blah, blah. But, I don't know...that move seemed a bit desperate and needy, and I guess I don't like my alpha guys desperate show more and needy to the point where they become stalkerish. show less
This book seemed very slow at the beginning, and usually anything to do with police procedures and such has always had an impact on me. In the beginning, we're following Ross as he starts to hunt and turns into a werewolf. This is the part of him that helps him track down the bad guys and such and makes him really, really good at his job! Then he gets hurt by the same killer that he is hunting. Hmmm.... now for the romance. He meets Megan who ends up taking him and helping him, but finds herself irresistibly drawn to him. But he remembered the havoc that his parents had gone through. Did he really want that for her?
This is the first book that I have read from Rebecca York (aka Ruth Glick) and it was pretty good. Once I got past the show more first part of the book I was okay. But I found it all too easy to set it down and almost forget about it. Once the action keep going, it became more interesting and then the romance... Ah, the romance. I could practically feel the romanctic tension between Ross and Megan radiating from the pages. Following Ross has he trails this serial killer and struggling between that and his supernatural side. Her characters are wonderful, very vivid in all aspects. My love for werewolves will continue. I do have a couple other of her books and I will read them and see what happens next! show less
