Day of the Scarab: Book Three of The Oracle Prophecies

Finalmente o fim. Uma trilogia que por vezes parecia muito estranha mas que até valeu a pena. Este último volume fala-nos da travessia dos oito portais que vão levar à revelação final e à redenção. Mas para chegar lá tem que se passar por muitas e duras provas. Mais uma vez a Mirany na viagem pelos portais e o Seth numa luta pela redenção do que aconteceu no livro anterior. E o General com um papel fundamental e a revelar-se uma surpresa, porque todos temos as nossas fraquezas.

I usually like Catherine Fisher's writing and stories, but I must say that for me "Day of the Scarab" was only mediocre. While the story was interesting enough, the characterization good, there were too many pages used to carry the storyline forwards. I think 50 or more could have been pared down with no harm.

The other thing I thought didn't work in this book was the choppy editing. It's one thing to flip from location and character from one chapter to the next. Another to do it multiple times within the same chapter... chapter after chapter.

For those who read the first two books, you'll probably want to track it down anyways to see what happens. Whether Seth and Mirany get together and what happens with The Jackal and Argelin.

Summary: The story takes place in a setting known as Two Lands, where evil is the prominent force because of General Argelin, who is determined to wipe out all of mankind and their Gods. Mirany is a young princess who is in hiding to escape from the evil that Argelin is casting over the Two Lands and Alexos, the boy who holds authority over the land, is powerless and frightened. A small group is formed among the people to gain control back through the gateway of the underworld.

Personal reflection: This book was more difficult for me to stay interested in because of all the characters involved in the book. I think it would be a good book for students to read aloud so students do not get confused with characters while attempting to read show more it by themselves.

Enige tijd terug las ik de Archon trilogie: Het Orakel, De Archon en De Scarabee. En sinds die tijd bazuin ik overal rond dat je deze boeken gelezen moet hebben. Spannend, meeslepend met prachtige beschrijvingen van een wereld die, hoewel ontsproten aan de fantasie van de schrijfster, vele raakvlakken heeft met onze wereld. Dat is natuurlijk geen uniek gegeven. Thea Beckman beschreef met haar trilogie Kinderen van moeder aarde ook een fantasiewereld waarin we veel over onze eigen wereld kunnen leren.

Catherine Fisher baseerde zich voor deze super spannende trilogie op het oude Egypte en het oude Griekenland. Met elementen uit deze landen, hun geschiedenis en mythologie maakte ze een zelfverzonnen wereld die bestaat uit de haven, de Stad show more der Doden en het eiland. Op het eiland bevindt zich het beroemde Orakel, dat negen priesteressen heeft, allen met een eigen taak. De heerser hierover is de Archon, de god in een menselijke vorm. Hoofdpersonen zijn Mirany, één van de negen priesteressen die in het eerste deel op zoek gaat naar de nieuwe Archon, Seth, een klerk die werkt in de Stad der Doden, Oblek, een dikke zanger en Archon / Alexos een jongen van 10 jaar die de verpersoonlijking is van de God op aarde.

Naast de myhologische kenmerken hebben de boeken ook een sterke filosofische ondertoon. De boeken gaan over goed en kwaad, vertrouwen, jaloezie en macht. Je moet deze boeken niet onafhankelijk van elkaar lezen. gewoon beginnen met Het Orakel, daarna De Archon en tot slot De Scarabee en, tja, dan is helaas de koek op en rest je niets anders dan overal rond te bazuinen dat je deze boeken gelezen móet hebben! show less
