Saguna is the first autobiographical novel in English by an Indian woman. It was published as a book is 1895, and translated into Tamil in 1896. It is a pioneering nineteenth-century classic, describing an Indian woman's interrogation of her disturbing experience of religious and cultural hybridity, and of feminism in the colonial encounter.
