Description
For more than half a century Miss Hyacinthe Phypps has been offering guidance on proper behavior. Her simple rules of propriety and common sense have helped a generation of girls over the threshold to womanhood. Recognizing the need that prevails more today than ever before, Miss Phypps has been persuaded to bring back into print this priceless volume of her words of advice, delightfully accompanied by Edward Gorey's ink and watercolor illustrations, that have been so valuable on so many show more occasions. It is the publisher's fondest hope that this book will serve the current generation of young ladies as it served their mothers. show lessTags

A glorious spoof on those little books of manners as each page features advice on how to deal with an awkward situation following a recent "deflowerment" - I particularly liked the advice for a honeymooning wife - accompanied by one of Gorey's fabulous drawings.
A book of helpful advice for the young lady who has found herself in the indelicate position of losing her maidenhead, possibly to a perfect stranger, and maybe on a train or some other, very public location. With uncharacteristically light-hearted illustrations by Edward Gorey. Out of print - if you see a copy, snag it. It'll provide you with years of delighted re-reading.
Quick cute read, especially if you think about reading it back in 1965. I wasn't expecting *all* of the advice to be related to assorted forms of deflowerment, but that was a bonus.
Edward Gorey pokes fun at advice columns and damsels in delighted distress.
Quite possibly the weirdest book I've ever come across. (But only slightly weirder than the last Edward Gorey I read.)
