Description
This original graphic novel acts as a biography for a fictional entertainer named Cowboy Wally. Chronicling his career from his children's program to his movie work to his late night talk show, we witness the hilarious peaks and valleys of Cowboy Wally's life as he stumbles back and forth between success and failure. Whether using compromising pictures of a TV producer to get his own show or shooting a high-budget Hamlet remake in jail while incarcerated for drunken and disorderly conduct, show more Cowboy Wally always has a story to tell. At a certain time in his career, Kyle Baker worked for TV animation and The Cowboy Wally Show may be seen as a compilation of all idiosyncrasies, polemics, strange executives decisions and utter shallowness of screen stars (obviously spiced of lots of humor).
Baker's art here still shows the Bill Sienkiewicz influences, with strong black inks, in counterpoint to the more Disney-like style of the recent works.
There are really some typos in the 1996 Marlowe & Company edition that were corrected in the Vertigo edition.
The only downpoint (IMHO) is that it is very long and at a certain point you have no clue of how it will end (Does it actually ends?). Besides it, Great as usual.

The art is simply astounding. Baker populates a standard framework of eight panels per page with line drawings that beautifully capture expression and attitude with the skill of an old-time cartoonist. Then there’s the dialogue. Baker’s sarcastic wit has never been more directly presented, aimed directly at the business of popular culture.
