de Maupassant really is one of the masters of the form of the short story. Each one of these little stories is a picture of human emotion and acts and our futility and failings.

The chief story is, of course, The Necklace, but many of the others are also excellent. A Piece of String, Two Little Soldiers, Moonlight- well, all of them are good. Give him a try.
