A very thorough collection of early Serbian ballads, including many from the Kosovo cycle as well as
later material, covering events from roughly 1350 to 1700 as well as purely legendary tales.. Many end tragically, but a few, such as "The Betrothed of Komjen" have delightful happy endings.
The Kosovo material does help the non-Serbian reader understand why many Serbs feel so strongly about Kosovo today.
