Description

Badian tells the story of a village family in an African country under French rule. The family's father and the eldest son revere the customs of their ancestors, while the younger children are strongly attracted by European ways and ideas. The inevitable conflict intensifies when the daughter, who has fallen in love with her Westernized schoolmate, is promised in marriage to a merchant who already has two wives.

Quotations
"You should not run away from your environment. Instead, you should try to affect it. Try to save what must be saved, and strive to contribute something yourself to the others: a face carved in ebony, the dazzling scenery of ... (show all)our countryside on a painter's canvas!"
"Customs are made to serve men, not at all to enslave them. Be realistic; break all that enslaves man and keeps him from going forward."
Go forth with our values, go forth courageously and say "no" to hate, because if it is in hate that you find your fervor, when hate disappears, you will be an extinct people!
"The old people are all confused, and you, you have disappointed them, because what they expected of you was a sympathetic understanding and a gradual, enlightened introduction to the system that is being forced upon them."
Last words
(Click to show. Warning: May contain spoilers.)"And you too, my son, some day you will be thirsty."
