Ford Newcombe became a famous writer with his wife's support, but he was devastated when she died young of cancer. He hires a bright, witty young woman, Jackie, as his assistant, because she tells an interesting story of a woman who was stoned for loving the devil. They track down the town where this story originated, and are quickly in the middle of a mystery. Jackie has a few psychic moments where she predicts and prevents a catastrophe. They slowly figure out that she witnessed this stoning as a child, and there truly is a devil--who now tries to win Jackie. Ford also faces his own past and makes peace with his estranged relatives. A slightly creepy, but very interesting and funny story.
I loved it. It's the first book in years to touch my heart. There was something about it that was just so right. Each chapter is written from either Ford's or Jackie's perspective; and that makes the story richer and funnier.
rabck from MissCyn, NOT a romance novel like this author usually writes. Told in alternating chapters between Ford, the bestselling author who hasn't written anything of substance since his wife/agent died 6 years ago, and Jackie, a university researcher who's devil story of her hometown intrigues Ford. So, he hires her as an assistant, buys a falling town house in that town and sets off to find out more about the Devil story. What is fact and what is fiction?
I loved this book! The story was great and unexpected. The main characters were easy to fall in love with. The side characters were wonderfully quirky. There was lots of mystery and suspense, and some supernatural and love. It was a riveting read that kept me turning pages. There was no love at first sight but instead a slow build up to love. Plenty of adventures await! You don't want to miss this book!
Supernatural aspects aside, something about these characters doesn't ring true, but if you're able to offer 'the willing suspension of disbelief,' Wild Orchids is a fascinating story.

While this is a romance, it's not your typical harlequin style - there is only one sex scene (and it's brief). The story is good in that it's written from the perspective of the male protaganist, and he has met an unlikely heroine. Great dialog - a fun, engaging read.
This was one of the first books I've read that is written in the first person. I enjoyed the story.
