A fast, fun, and spooky thriller for kids about a twelve-year-old girl (Carly Beth) who hid away an ugly green mask in her basement. A while ago she bought it, put it on, and she couldn’t take it off. It made her do evil things. Now, with Halloween on the way, the mask seems to be calling to her…

There is also a short, continuing, secondary story included in this book titled “Enter Horrorland” which was enjoyable and takes place in an amusement park. ( )

Huh. I thought I had this figured out within the first few chapters, but for the first time in a while, Stine's twist ending actually took an unexpected turn. Pleasantly enough, this Goosebumps was annoying-character free (Stine writes intentionally annoying characters far too well). ( )

This was a sequel, and although I have never read The Haunted Mask, I was able to follow The Scream of the Haunted Mask just fine. It was rather creepy (but not quite Fear Street-level), and the soundtrack and sound effects in the audio book added immensely to that vibe. The second part - the Horrorland story - was a little harder to follow as I have not read the second and third books in the Horrorland series and the stories are continuous. ( )

I am not a huge fan of Goosebumps books, but many reluctant readers love the series. I was surprised at how creepy the story could get, and I can see why many students enjoy reading these books. This book could be used for literature circles with a scary horror theme. I can also be used for learning and using literary devices, such as personification with the haunted mask.
