Description

Clara Wilson has come all the way to London to clear her name (after her wilfulness has left her quite unweddable across the ocean). But before she even has a chance to practise her curtsey, she stumbles into the arms of Seger Wolfe, Marquess of Rawdon. Clara has never felt love before, but she has no doubt when she meets the Marquess that this is what it feels like. Too bad love is the last thing on her mind - she's here to find a husband, not a rake. Every good gossip knows that the show more notoriously wealthy Marquess loved and lost years ago, and few have missed the way his broken heart drove him from society ballrooms into society ladies' bedrooms. But when he meets the misplaced Clara Wilson at one of the town's ever-so-scandalous secret balls, the desire he feels for her is too strong, and it pulls him back into the swirl of aristocratic London. Now he finds himself competing for the heart of the inappropriate beauty, and risking his own heart in the game. show less

First Impressions
What an incredible read this one was. show more This technically is a reread as I read this one many years ago and for some reason I never wrote a review so I decided to reconnect with the story and it was just as good if not better on the second round. Its book like this that will respark my love for the genre. You have just about everything that made this book a win. From scandal....to a sensual meet cute, slow burning and a marriage of sorts of convenience and some outer factors trying to split our pair apart from making a love match......and the author delivered on every front!!!

First Line
Lady Berkshire sighed contentedly as she handed her lover's greatcoat to him.

The Main Protagonists
The Hero: Seger Wolfe, Marquest of Rawdon
The Heroine: Clara Wilson

Summary
Clara Wilson (The sister of Sara Wilson from To Marry the Duke-Book One) has come to England to find a husband and she is hoping to find a love match similar to what her sister has found in her Duke. She accepts an invitation to a ball....but when she arrives she senses that there is something more happening than meets the eye. She shares a dance with a stranger and they share a kiss in the darkened halls but Seger knows that she is an innocent and sends her away from a party that is much more than a respectable ball. But Clara is determined to find her sexy stranger whom she can't stop thinking about ....and through a course of events they start sharing letters and secret attraction but there is a scandal and there are players involved that don't want a love to be made and will stop at nothing to destroy the precious love that is building between Seger and Sara...

What I Loved
This book had my heart and attention from beginning to end. I barely even checked the percentage that I was at. Which is NOT common when reading an historical especially lately but this book totally had me hooked. I was so drawn into their chemistry, the scandalous kisses they were sharing and that CARRIAGE SCENE!!! One if not the best carriage scenes that I have ever read. I was so in tune with their chemistry. And both characters won me over very quickly. We have our hero, who is such a rake. A REAL rake but he hides it beneath some hidden pains of the past. And has also been treated poorly by society and scandal and not truly accepted by the Ton. And then we have Clara Wilson who is open and bright and has a excitement about her that is refreshing. She wants love and passion in her life and even though she has had a past of scandal of her own, she wants a fresh start in England and desires a man like Seger to truly love her. I loved how honest these two were with each other. Its not always rainbows and flowers between them, they have to work at their communication at times but it feels real in how it flows and I just admired that they didn't wait to communicate and something it didn't always go perfect but they both share this honest desire to make their relationship work. I also enjoyed the plot of the outer forces trying to split them up and seeing the ways Seger and Clara rise above it and find a way to trust in each other. This story delivered so much heart, swoons and moments that captures your attention quickly.

What I Struggled With
Not much .....Some of the moments of angst wasn't always my favorite but you always have to have some type of conflict I guess lol

Overall View
An Affair Most Wicked was a delightful story that I was eager to indulge in and it satisfied me in just about every way and I can't wait to read the rest of the series and more from this author. A true keeper.

Recommendation For Reading Order
Yes for the most enjoyment I would say its best to read in order but you can also read as a standalone.

Steam/Spice Explanations

Warmin' by the fire- a medium level of sexual tension, a balance of sexual and emotional intimacy, lighter on the details in the sexual moments.

From BackCover:
My Dear Miss Wilson,

I have no wish to spoil your chances of meeting the decent and respectable man you desire. Yet I find I cannot idly sit back and accept that I will never see you again, or -- forgive me for my candor -- kiss you again. If I were like other gentlemen, I would say good-bye to you now and wish you the best. But I have not behaved as a gentleman for many years....Do you understand my meaning?

S.

So begins a very wicked correspondence between the scandal-ridden Marquess of Rawdon and Clara Wilson, an heiress with more than a few of her own secrets to hide. Clara has come all the way to London to find respectability, but she has always craved excitement, and adventure has always sought her out.

This time, show more excitement is a man unlike any she has ever met before, one who is stunning, brilliant, and definitely not what her mother had in mind. Clara's cautious younger sister Adele warns her to be wary and remember her past follies, but her spirited older sister Sophia urges her to risk it all for love. Clara knows the answer lies somewhere in between, but with her heart and her future on the line, the stakes will never be higher.… show less
