Description

"On a tiny lighthouse island far from the rest of the world, a lonely hermit lives out his existence. Every week a supply boat leaves provisions, its occupants never meeting him, never asking the obvious questions: Who are you? Why do you hide? Why do you never leave? What is it like to be so alone? Years spent on a deserted rock--a lifetime, really--with imagination his sole companion has made the lighthouse keeper something more than alone, something else entirely. For him, what lies show more beyond the horizon might be...nothing. And so, why not stay put? But one day, as a new boatman starts asking the questions all others have avoided, a chain of events unfolds that will irrevocably upend the hermit's solitary life" -- provided by publisher. show less

Outstanding graphic novel. Chabouté's starkly beautiful black and white images relay mystery, beauty, and mood with eloquence. With few words, the art entrances the reader, developing the story through images that require the reader to look carefully, and with patience. The main character doesn't even appear until well into 100 pages into the book. Readers are rewarded with a beautiful, unexpected story. Especially great for teaching visual literacy and storytelling.
A man sits all alone in a lighthouse feeling bad about his looks and playing an odd game with a dictionary that ends up sort of combining a word-of-the-day calendar, the story of the three blind men and the elephant, and a Magic 8 Ball. Between the many, many repetitions of the game some people pass by in boats and we are shown lots and lots and lots of birds, leaves, horses, water and other scenes of nature. Based on the size I thought it would take me hours to get through this book, but I skimmed through the slight story and the oodles of wordless panels in less than an hour and sort of wondered why I had bothered.
Chabouté uses his storytelling skills to tell the tale of a man that lives in a lighthouse and the mistery around him, showing us the vast landscape surrounding the rock in wordless sequences. Very beautiful and poetic.
An Intriguing story. This rich, dark and detailed illustrated tale is simply beautiful.

Lovely, sad and sweet.
