Description

Carmen is an 1845 novella by French author Prosper Mérimée. It has been adapted into a number of dramatic works, including the famous opera by Georges Bizet. The novella comprises four parts. Only the first three appeared in the original publication in the October 1, 1845 issue of the Revue des Deux Mondes; the fourth first appeared in the book publication in 1846. Mérimée tells the story as if it had really happened to him on his trip to Spain in 1830.

Carmen, histoire espagnole?
Did I know anything about Carmen, the book or the opera, before checking this out? Nope. Saw it was from Melville House's Art of the Novella series, did a cursory check of the back cover, and checked it out. Personally, I'm glad I came to the story a blank slate, because it was all fresh and brilliant and crisp. Carmen is a brilliant example of the chaotic neutral character if I've ever seen one.

A few times it felt excessively old-fashioned, but, you know, 1845?

Probably would never have read it if not for Melville House. Those chaps have done their job again.
Slightly intriguing, but mostly underdeveloped. I only give it an extra star because it somehow inspired some of the most beautiful music I've ever heard.
Story that was used for the opera. Off last chapter about the gipsy language.
