Description

He was a man who stood for something, and never turned his back on a fight. So when Jared MacKade's work as an attorney brought him up against Savannah Morningstar, her rude behavior and strong defenses weren't going to stop him.

Savannah was the type of woman who defeated odds brutally stacked against her. And once he got to know her, Jared was determined to be the man to stand beside her in the fight.

It is a testament to Nora Roberts' writing that this story was enjoyable despite the fact that the heroine is utterly unlikable and unappealing.

Savannah Morningstar is quite simply a B*TCH and I never use that word lightly! Not only is she rude and obnoxious, but she is prejudiced and vindictive as well. The reasoning is that her actions are ostensibly a defense mechanism, but this is insufficient to explain her inexcusable behavior.

Jared MacKade is stubborn and proud but he certainly hasn’t done anything remotely bad enough to deserve Savannah as his heroine. Even his obvious double standards when it comes to men and women don’t warrant this.

The story of the civil war antagonists which bothers so show more many reviewers is actually one that I enjoyed. Nevertheless, it is underdeveloped and the connection to the modern day characters is tenuous at best.

Hopefully the next installment will provide more of a link.

I'm reading this series all out of order. I read three, four, and now two. Eventually I'll work my way to one. Hopefully it wont be as disappointing as this book. After Devin and Shane's stories I was expecting more and less obnoxious. Savannah was rocking one giant inferiority complex and was just rude and nasty to people who were being nice to her for no reason other than her own issues. She annoyed the crap out of me at the beginning of the book. She had her moments throughout the book, especially her childish stunt at the end, but she did get better for the most part. But when she did, Jared picked up the thread and became a barely tolerable slut-shaming idiot. I freaking hate that term but there is no other way to describe his show more stupidity. I kept hoping all three of his brothers would pound the ever-loving crap out of him. At least he was called out on his sexism by Savannah and his brothers. But at a certain point I didn't really want either of them together. Everything happened too fast, from love, to forgiveness. It jumped from one to the other, without showing how and why. They both acted stupid. This felt really different to the last two books. I'm also disappointed there weren't more scenes with all four brothers together. The last two books of the series were much better about that. show less
Quite possibly it's the contrast with the last 3 books I read, but every time I read this, I never like Savannah, and at least this time around, I don't like Jared either. She doesn't have just a chip on her shoulder--it's the entire rock. And he's a hypocritical Neanderthal. She's nasty and rude, and thinks the worst of people (or at least of men) before she even meets them, and I can't find anything in her to relate to. He apparently thinks any woman he deigns to be interested in should be a virgin, or at least a victim. I didn't believe the romance--all I saw was that they had the hots for each other. I didn't understand the rush--that demand for immediate trust and complete disclosure of every event in her entire life 5 minutes show more after they meet (yes, I'm exaggerating, but not much). I was not remotely amused or sympathetic when she destroyed a couple thousand dollars worth of his belongings because she was pissed off at him. The three stars are because there are some genuinely good parts. Like when Jared talks to Bryan before asking Savannah to marry him. But on the whole, really not one of Nora's better efforts. show less
Good not great. Fairly typical contemporary romance.
I just loved this series and wish there were a 5th brother. I wrote my review of the series on book #4, The Fall of Shane MacKade.
