Some good bits here, but lots of filler. Plus there's loads of stuff that never gets followed up as far as I can tell. Strange considering how much extra GW have wrung out of the HH, so many crap novels about nothing, whereas here is a subplot that could have been developed and wasn't. The vaguaries of the GW machine!
Much better than Decent of Angels, the story was well put together and the various characters were shown to have believable flaws as opposed to randomly making treasonous decisions out of nowhere. The main two characters were done very well, as in the last book, but what was done even better was the fact that both had their personalities fleshed out. The perspective also shifted between the two, allowing the reader to see the parallels between them and their differences better. I loved the contrast between the two, and look forward to the next book dealing with them. The ending was also very enjoyable, and did a great job setting up the next story of the conflict.
This one is a sequel to "Descent of Angels" so be warned - if you are not familiar with the first book this one may seem a little bit fuzzy.
After being sent to Caliban Luther, Zachariel and other veterans start to work on their new task - recruiting new aspirants and bringing up Calibans weapon production capacities to the greatest levels possible in order to support further Dark Angel Legino's war efforts.
On the other hand Namiel - now serving directly under Lion El'Jonson's command - embarks on a daring commando raid. If they fail Empire's enemies may gain a tremendous advantage.
New secrets are revealed and nothing is like it seems. Again one can only wonder what are the plans of both Primarchs and the Emperor - after all they are all show more human beings.
Great story, characters are lively with their doubts, fears but also practical and logical approach to the events taking place around them.
Highly recommended. show less

A direct sequel to Descent Of Angels, this one pulls the early discovery of Caliban and Primarch Jonson much further into the Horus Heresy saga. One faction of the Dark Angels is returned to Caliban while Primarch Jonson and other Angels travel to Diamat to protect the outpost from coming under Horus' control, a pivotal move in gaining an upper hand in the massive civil war brewing. Librarian Zahariel and those banished to Caliban discover the makings of their own planet-wide civil war, which threatens to unleash Chaos and completely destroy their home world. The trick to enjoying this book is being able to bounce back and forth between the battles on Caliban and Diamat and keeping all the details straight. Both theaters are remarkably show more similar in their unfolding destruction, but it is these parallels that make this such a good read. show less
This book again deals with the Dark Angels Legion and their Primarch. It is really hard to review books based on a hobby. The Warhammer Universe needs no introduction to fans of the hobby games. Most people who are interested in these books, are familiar with the lore, as they play the games, and are introduced to parts of the lore through gaming materials and codex. This series give an in-depth look at the timeline of the gaming lore. Basically this series, (The Horus Heresy) is about civil war in the 38th millennium. The universe is filled with aliens, war, and humanities slow decline into dystopian madness. The language used in the books is a bit different, but if you are a big science-fiction reader you will have no problems getting show more use to the vocabulary. The series is long, and an investment in time, but are also well written and very good. I hope you will enjoy them as much as I did. No spoiler from me as a reviewer. If you are looking for a complete reading list, just google "The Horus Heresy reading order" and you will find a good bit of information. show less
If you liked the "Descent of Angels" installment then you should like this story as part of the book takes you back to Caliban and tells the story of what happened to Luther and Zaharial after being banished from the crusade and the rest of the Dark Angles, as the rest of the story tells of what Primarch Lion El' Johnson and Nemiel do to try and thwart Horus's plans after learning of his betrayal
