Re-read after lo these many decades. This is a wonderfully warm book that explores the world of Cody, who is newly ten years old. Cumberland mountain is a paradise for him, though he does have his troubles (namely Omalia, his pesky little sister). Cody's experience with riddles is hilarious, and the day he learns how to find a bee tree with his dad's help is a beautiful passage. The illustrations by Ursula Koering are delightful.

Every bit as much fun as I remembered.

I remember this book as one I read and re-read as a youngster - a very young youngster. It was written about Cody, his family and the small community in which he lived. If I could liken Cody to a television show character, I'd say he's like Opie in The Andy Griffith Show. Nothing dreadful or violent happens. Instead, one learns how a family supports each other through hard work, humour and love.
