An Edwardian melodrama which contains all elements of the genre. Murder (of course),a gang of coiners with an evil chief who is an expert in disguise. All this plus,it goes without saying,a secret passage. In addition there is a somewhat involved sub-plot concerning the loves and hates of several of the main characters.
The detective,Miles Jennings is somewhat ineffectual and seems to work mainly by awaiting for events to wash over him. He answers questions by replying 'I'll tell you later' and one strongly suspects that this is because he just doesn't know the answer.
The story however has many twists and turns and is overall rather entertaining. It has to be said that the villains (of which there are many) are much more interesting than show more the rather insipid and generally vapid heroes and their lady companions. show less

Very dated detective story, the characters are uninteresting and the plot does not manage to hold the interest of the reader.
